God’s Country is a mystery thriller based on James Lee Burke’s short story Winter Light, co-written and directed by Julian Higgins. It follows Sandra, a college professor who moves from New Orleans to the remote mountains of the American West. Everything is going normally in her life until she catches two hunters trespassing on her property. After the confrontation, Sandra is haunted and terrified as she regularly sees the duo around her house, drawing her into an escalating battle of wills with deadly consequences.

Where Was God’s Country Movie Filmed?
‘God’s Country was filmed entirely in Montana, specifically in Dillon, Paradise Valley, Livingston, Bozeman, and Lennep. Principal photography for director Julian Higgins reportedly began in February 2020 but was halted in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Montana
Several key sequences for ‘God’s Country’ were filmed in Dillon, the city and county seat of Beaverhead County, Montana. In late March 2021, cast and crew members were spotted using University of Montana Western facilities at 710 South Atlantic Street, including the campus’ historic main hall, to film some scenes for the film.

Other parts of ‘God’s Country was recorded in Park County. Specifically, the team set up camp in the county town of Livingston and Paradise Valley, the Yellowstone River’s main river valley.
Interestingly, a small portion of Yellowstone National Park is located in the southern part of the county. Over the years, Park County has hosted the production of many film projects such as A River Runs It, Montana Story, Wildlife, Yellowstone, and 1883.

Several sequences for ‘God’s Country were shot in remote locations such as Lennep, a ghost town, and a settlement in Meagher County. Additionally, during filming, the production unit screened some key scenes in Bozeman, the city and county seat of Gallatin County, particularly at the Gallatin Valley Botanical Garden at Rocky Creek Farm at 34297 Frontage Road.
