‘This Is 40’ Written and directed by Judd Apatow, is somewhat of a sequel to Apatow’s 2007 directorial “Knocked Up,” set 5 years after the events of the latter. It follows Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) as they try to overcome the trials and tribulations of their relationship and their children, all while preparing for their respective 40th birthdays.
The beauty of romantic comedy is that it explores the themes of parenthood, adulthood, and growing up in general through compelling acting and snappy writing that spices up everyday conflicts for fun.
Pete and Debbie are two relatable characters with such average circumstances that they get on each other’s nerves wherever they are, but they still look out for each other and have a great time. Their relationship is like a tumbleweed that changes its course with its surroundings.
