‘Corsage’ Written and directed by Marie Kreutzer, is a multilingual historical drama that is part fictional and part biographical account of the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Set in the late 1870s, the story follows Elizabeth as she begins to play with her character as her 40th birthday approaches. She spends a lot of time taking care of her appearance and has always been adored for her beauty. However, when she turns 40, she will officially be labeled as old.
Empress Elizabeth, who is not used to such comments, begins to try with all her might to maintain her image in the eyes of the public. To come to terms with her long-gone young days and taste the excitement, she reunites with her former lovers and old friends.
While the dramatic narrative keeps the audience engaged with the film from start to finish, the 19th-century setting against the backdrop of several interesting locations arouses curiosity about the actual filming locations of Corsage.
Where Was Corsage Movie Filmed?
The corsage was filmed in Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, and Italy, mainly in Vienna, Lower Austria, Schifflange, Virton, Metz, and Ancona. According to reports, filming for the lead role of Vicky Krieps began in early March 2021 and ended in July of the same year. In an interview with AFCinema in June 2022, cinematographer Judith Kaufmann detailed the production process.
Kaufmann added: “We started filming in Austria from winter to spring 2021 and continued in Luxembourg, France, and Italy in the summer. A total of thirty-six shooting days with a dizzying number of different locations. Several castles are among the most representative locations in the film. Filming there was strictly regulated and it was often very difficult to get the necessary permits for anything from a technical point of view.”
Austria
Several important scenes for Corsage were filmed in Vienna, Austria’s capital, the largest and most populous city. The Hofburg in central Vienna and Schönbrunn Palace at Schönbrunner Schloßstraße 47 are two palaces where many key scenes for the film were filmed. In mid-June 2021, the cast and crew were spotted filming several exteriors around Maria-Theresien-Platz at Burgring 5 in Vienna.

For filming purposes, the ‘Corsage’ production team also traveled to Lower Austria, Austria’s second most populous state, located in the northeastern part of the country. They apparently used the premises of the Eckartsau Castle at Castle 1 in the town of Eckartsau in the district of Gänserndorf in Lower Austria.
In the 18th century, Eckartsau Castle was acquired by Emperor Francis I, husband of Maria Theresa. Despite the centuries-old premises of the castle, they give visitors a feeling of luxury and joy from the past. In addition, a few scenes were reportedly filmed in the town of Prigglitz.
Luxembourg
Several parts of “Corsage” were also filmed in Schifflange, a village, and town located in the southwestern part of Luxembourg.

Schifflange was founded as early as 1876 after it was separated from Esch-Sur-Alzette. According to reports, the crew camped at several beautiful castles in and around the city to shoot the on-location scenes for the film.
Belgium
Virton, a town, and municipality in the Belgian province of Luxembourg, also served as a vital location for the production of “Corsage”. In particular, the production team used the premises of the Château de Laclaireau in the Rue de la 7ème Divison Française in Virton to shoot several important scenes for the film.

Built between 1852 and 1855 on the initiative of Count Camille de Briey, Château de Laclaireau was a residential château where many high-ranking people lived. Two more wings were added around 1877.
France
Additional portions of the ‘Corsage’ were made in Metz, a city in the northeast of France, located near the tripoint along the junction of France, Germany, and Luxembourg. The film crew reportedly shot several key scenes in and around the villa.

Metz is home to a number of museums and exhibition halls, including the Center Pompidou-Metz, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Metz Museum, and the FRAC Lorraine to name a few.
Italy
During the later stages of filming, the cast and crew reportedly stopped in Ancona, a city and port located in central Italy, to record several key sequences for “Courage.”
Specifically, Porto di Ancona – the Fincantieri area of Lungomare Vanvitelli, 80, in Ancona served as a place of primary production in the city.
