Netflix’s The Empress or Die Kaiserin, Created by Katharina Eyssen and Lena Stahl, is a German historical romance series based on the life of Empress Elisabeth “Sisi” of Austria. When a sixteen-year-old girl falls head over heels in love with her sister’s fiancé, Emperor Francis Joseph, they get married.
However, Sisi soon finds herself drawn into the complexities of court politics and the scheming nature of her in-laws. While her mother-in-law Sophia has constantly antagonized her, Franz’s younger brother Maximilian tries to downplay him and prove that he is better suited to the throne.
The dramatic and political story is enhanced by stellar performances on screen by a talented cast of actors and actresses, including Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Melika Foroutan, and Johannes Nussbaum. In addition, the historical backdrop of several ancient palaces and halls makes the audience know where “The Empress” was filmed.
Where Was The Empress Series Filmed?
“The Empress” is filmed exclusively in Germany, especially in Bavaria. Principal photography on the initial iteration of the period romance series is said to have begun in August 2021 and will wrap in January 2022. The Netflix show uses many of Germany’s historic and atmospheric castles to film.
