Starz’s “Power Book III: Raising Kanan”, a prequel to the TV series ‘Power’, is a crime series created by Sascha Penn. Set in the 1990s, the story follows Kanan Stark in his early years as he becomes interested in his family’s growing drug business.
With his mother, Raquel Thomas, reluctant to let him anywhere near the business, the still-young and naïve protagonist has no idea how ruthless and life-threatening the streets can be. Insistent on following in his mother’s footsteps, Kanan begins to understand the world around him and where he stands among others.
The tense and suspenseful narrative is made all the more entertaining by stellar performances from a talented cast including Mekai Curtis, Patina Miller, London Brown, and Malcolm Mays. In addition, the environment of the early 90s and the interesting use of locations will make one curious about the filming locations of the series.
Where Was Power Book III: Raising Kanan Series Filmed?
“Power Book III: Raising Kanan” was filmed entirely in New York State, specifically in New York City, Yonkers, Mount Vernon, and Nyack. Principal photography on the inaugural iteration of the crime series began in February 2020 but was temporarily halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, in November 2020, the production team started filming again.
As for the second season, filming began in July 2021, but the spike in the Omicron variant of Covid-19 forced a significant pause. After all the delays, filming for Season 2 finally wrapped up in March 2022.
New York
Most of the key sequences for ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ take place in New York, the most populous city in the United States. The production team is camping in the Bronx to shoot some important scenes for the series.
In particular, East Tremont, Orchard Beach, and Hunts Point serve as major manufacturing sites in the borough. Additionally, they are said to be using one of the soundstages in the Bronx to record many of the interior scenes.

Several exterior shots of the crime drama are shot on location on Queens Boulevard at 84th Drive and off Main Street, 89th Avenue, and 165th Street in Jamaica, Queens, 28th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues, Jamaica Avenue, and Baisley Pond Park. In November 2021, the “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” crew was spotted screening several key sequences for the second round at Coney Island.

Other parts of ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ take place in Mount Vernon, a town in Westchester County. In addition, the city of Yonkers in Westchester County served as a key filming location for the second season. In early October 2021, the cast and crew were also spotted filming several sequences for season 2 in Nyack, a village in Orangetown, Rockland County.
