“Surface” is a psychological thriller Tv series that revolves around Sophie, who suffered a traumatic head injury after attempting suicide, leaving her with little to no memory of the day of the fatal incident. Created by Veronica West.
As she tries to rebuild her life and figure out what really happened, she realizes that the version of the truth she’s heard from others may not be the one she actually lived. As a result, Sophie begins to question the motives of everyone around her, including her own husband, as she finds it hard to trust anyone.
The gripping narrative keeps the audience on the edge of their seats and scratching their heads throughout the performance. On the other hand, the flashback scenes in some interesting sets, where Sophie tries to remember what made her jump off the ferry, will make you think about the filming locations used for the thriller Surface series.
Where Was Surface Series Filmed?
‘Surface’ is being filmed in British Columbia and California, specifically in Vancouver and San Francisco. Principal photography for the inaugural iteration starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw began in June 2021 and wrapped in November of that year.
By choosing to film many of the sequences in San Francisco, where the story takes place, the production unit adds an element of authenticity to the narrative. Now let’s dive right into the specific locations featured in the psychological thriller Surface series!
California
Many of the key scenes for ‘Surface’ take place in San Francisco, a city, commercial and cultural center in the northern region of California. The production team camped out at the Palace Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel at 2 New Montgomery Street, to record some important sequences for the show’s debut season.

Additionally, the Palace of Fine Arts at 3601 Lyon Street served as a prominent filming location for the inaugural iteration. Other parts of Season 1 were filmed in the Lower Haight (specifically Haight Street) and Chinatown neighborhoods, centered on Grant Avenue and Stockton Street.
In an interview with Coming Soon magazine in late July 2022, Surface creator Veronica West was asked about the importance of setting the story in San Francisco. “From the beginning, we wanted this show to be a really sophisticated kind of escapist world that we would spend time in every week. San Francisco seemed like an ideal choice.

It has a certain timelessness and in a sense, the show is a throwback to classic noir films,” she explained, “there are some hints and nods to ‘Vertigo’ in the show. I think the San Francisco…shoot allowed us to really tap into that timeless classic quality and bring it to the surface.”
British Columbia
Several other episodes of the debut season of ‘Surface’ were also filmed in Vancouver, the capital city of the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. The city was mainly used as a stand-in for San Francisco, as the cast and crew shot several interior scenes in Vancouver for the first iteration.
