“Triangle of Sadness” Written and directed by Ruben Östlund, is a dark comedy that focuses on a famous model couple – Carl and Yaya. They almost always argue about money and gender roles in their relationship because she is much more successful than him.
In the midst of this constant bickering, they are invited aboard a luxury cruise along with many other wealthy passengers, including an elderly couple, a Russian oligarch and his wife, a lonely millionaire, and a German guest. Everything goes smoothly until a storm rolls in outside, causing the superyacht to sink and many passengers to become seasick.
The ship eventually sinks and Carl and Yaya find themselves on a deserted island with a group of millionaires and the ship’s cleaner. Since the latter is the only one with decent fishing skills, the hierarchy is turned upside down, just like a sunken ship. While the satirical narrative keeps things interesting for the audience, the use of different scenery throughout the film raises the question of where “Triangle of Sadness” was filmed.
Where Was Triangle of Sadness Movie Filmed?
“Triangle of Sadness” was filmed in Sweden and Greece, specifically in Evvia, Trollhättan, and Katakolo. Principal photography began in February 2020 but was suspended the following month due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with about 37% of filming completed. After several months of delays, production resumed in late June 2020 and was halted again in July of that year.
Then, in September 2020, the film crew returned to work and finally wrapped filming in November 2020. It took them about 73 days to complete the production. Now let’s look at all the specific sites that appear in the Triangle of Sadness comedy movie!
Sweden
According to reports, the “Triangle of Sadness” team has started shooting the movie in Trollhättan, Sweden’s 23rd largest city and seat of Trollhättan Municipality in the Västra Götaland region. In particular, the cast and crew used Film I Väst studios, a film company in Trollhättan, to build the interiors of the yacht depicted in the film.

The company was founded in 1992 and has co-produced more than a thousand Swedish and international projects.
Greece
After wrapping up the portions they intended to shoot in Sweden, the crew traveled to Evvia, or Euboea, Greece’s second-largest island in terms of area and population. Most of the scenes were shot in and around Hiliadou Beach in northern Evvia, while a few parts were recorded in the coastal town of Kymi.

Additional parts for “Triangle of Sadness” were filmed in Katakolo, a seaside town in Pyrgos in western Elis. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea, the port of Katakolo is a fairly popular stopover for cruise ships, making it a suitable location for the production of dark comedies.

The team filmed many scenes in open waters, including the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, aboard the iconic Christina O, a private motor yacht previously owned by Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy. It consists of a master suite, eighteen-passenger cabins, and numerous indoor and outdoor living spaces (which were used for the filming of many scenes). As of 2018, she was the 45th largest yacht in the world.
