Netflix’s Shanty Town, created by Xavier Ighorodj, is a Nigerian action crime series that revolves around a group of courtesans trying to escape the clutches of a dangerous and notorious kingpin. Hoping to finally taste freedom, the courtesans are stopped by blood ties and the political corruption that runs deep within the system. Even when freedom seems almost impossible, the courtesans do not lose hope and constantly fight back.
The intensity of the narrative is matched by stellar performances from a cast of talented actors and actresses including Ini Edo, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Chidi Mokeme, Sola Sobowale, and Nse Ikpe-Etim. While the action sequences and engaging storyline keep the audience on edge in every episode, the number of locations where all the action takes place makes one wonder where ‘Shanty Town’ is being filmed.
Where Was Shanty Town Series Filmed?
‘Shanty Town’ is being filmed in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos. Originally made as a feature film, principal photography on the crime drama is said to have started in May 2021 and wrapped up in about a month, in June of that year. Located in West Africa, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the sixth most populous country in the world.
Not only does this country rank very low on the Human Development Index, it is also considered one of the most corrupt countries in the world. These flaws are highlighted throughout the show, which is why Nigeria is a fitting location for the filming of ‘Shanty Town.’
Nigeria
All key sequences of ‘Shanty Town’ are set in and around Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city and Africa’s second most populous city. From the looks of it, the production team is seemingly traveling across the city to shoot various scenes, both interiors, and exteriors, on suitable backdrops. In addition, it cannot be ruled out that several key parts of the performance, mostly action scenes, will be filmed in one of the film studios in and around the city.

Although Lagos is known to be the financial and economic center of Nigeria, there are high rates of urban poverty in several areas that ostensibly serve as Shanty Towns in the series. In addition, the city has a strong influence on various industries, including art, fashion, tourism, business, technology, politics, entertainment, and more.

Apart from sandy beaches like Elegushi Beach and Alpha Beach, Lagos is also home to a number of other tourist attractions. Highlights include the Nike Art Gallery, Tafawa Balewa Square, Christ Marina Cathedral Church, and Freedom Park. Due to the city’s vast and versatile landscape, many filmmakers tend to visit Lagos for filming. Over the years, his locations have appeared in “Nigerian Prince”, “Kind of Boys”, “Queen Sono” “Blood Sisters”, and “La Unidad”.
