Hulu’s “The Drop” is a deliberate comedy that follows the life of a married couple planning to have a baby. Lex (Anna Konkle) and Mani (Jermaine Fowler) attend their friend’s wedding. A couple decides to get pregnant in a beautiful destination. However, Lex drops her friend’s baby and now has to go back to the idea of having a baby. We’re in for a bunch of passive-aggressive comments, past mistakes, and judgments from people.
Director Sarah Adina Smith explores the entire human experience of shame, guilt, and trauma through a comedic lens. A fundamental aspect of the film that contributed to its tonality was the choice of location. In addition to the unique theme, it also won an award for the visuals, which take place in a dream town with a tropical landscape. If you’re tempted to find out about The Drop filming location.
Where Was The Drop Movie Filmed?
The Drop was filmed in Mexico, precisely in the small coastal town of Sayulita. Production of the comedy film reportedly took place for three weeks in the first half of 2021 in the Mexican town.
Mexico
The Drop was primarily filmed in Sayulita, a quaint and charming fishing village at the southern end of the state of Nayarit and north of Banderas Bay. Located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Sayulita is considered the Pueblo Mágico, which translates to “Magic City,” for its vibrant, colorful architecture, bohemian vibes, and surf culture. The tropical paradise is where you can go on party vacations, take surfing lessons, enjoy authentic Mexican seafood, whale and dolphin watching, and shop at artsy hippie markets.
Since all such aesthetic places are easily accessible in the city, filmmakers were tempted to capture the beauty of these places in their films. Not only did they film on the beaches of Sayulita, but they also filmed several sequences in the middle of the ocean where Jermaine Fowler had to dive into water allegedly infested with jellyfish. Another movie that had some footage shot in Sayulita is “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.” Even the second season of “Bachelor in Paradise” was filmed entirely at this particular location.

Shaheen Sheth, cinematographer, and husband of director Sarah Adina Smith, took to Instagram to describe his experience in this tropical paradise. He mentioned how the cast and crew woke up to the sounds of the ocean and chachalacas (a local bird). In an interview with Breezway productions at the Tribeca premiere, actor Utkarsh Ambudkar had great things to say about Sayulita.
He said, “I just wanted to work with people and go to Mexico for free, and I had to bring my family, and we were there in Sayulita, and it was beautiful, and they need to make a movie about how this movie was made.”

An interesting fact is that the director was in her third trimester during filming, and actress Anna Konkle became a mother only three months ago. Both embraced motherhood and decided to be productive for the film, which expresses questions about the feelings and thoughts that consumed them before and during pregnancy.
Anna was quite appreciative of her director’s efforts, saying: “Sarah was eight months pregnant when she directed and she was incredible.” Additionally, the star cast and crew expressed their admiration for their director’s dedication.

Even the production process of this The Drop film is an empowering story for women from all walks of life and a blow to all the orthodox beliefs about women throwing away their professional lives after giving birth. You can always take on creative projects like “The Drop” and fly to a sky city like Sayulita, create an improvised dark comedy about a situation that might fit, which is exactly what Sarah did!
