Paramount+’s ‘Significant Other’ Co-written and directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, is a sci-fi mystery film that revolves around a young and loving couple – Harry and Ruth. Together they embark on a backpacking trip to an isolated location across the Pacific Northwest.
What started as a fun and adventurous trip soon turns dangerous and even life-threatening as they realize things in the forest are not what they seem and they can have company.
When Ruth is found injured by an elderly couple in the wilderness, the memories she sees and her reluctance to reveal the events that led her there build narrative tension and keep the audience in their seats. On the other hand, the lush green locations and water backdrops will probably make one wonder where the movie “Significant Other” was actually filmed.
Where Was Significant Others Movie Filmed?
“Significant Other” was shot entirely in Oregon, particularly Portland and the Oregon Coast. Principal photography, starring Maika Monroe, apparently began in October 2021 and wrapped in November of that year.
Now, without further ado, let’s follow the young couple on their backpacking adventure and drive through all the specific locations featured in the Significant Other movie!
Oregon
Most of the forest and wilderness sequences for “Significant Other” were shot on location at Silver Falls State Park, Oregon’s largest state park. As it turned out, the film crew traveled through the state park to film various scenes on suitable backdrops. Located near the town of Silverton, Silver Falls is home to many waterfalls such as Winter Falls, Drake Falls, Twin Falls, Double Falls, and Crag Falls to name a few.

For filming purposes, the ‘Significant Other’ production team also stopped by Portland, a port city in the Pacific Northwest and the largest city in Oregon. During the shoot, the cast and crew members were spotted shooting many scenes for the film around the city. Additionally, several servings have also reportedly been recorded on the Oregon coast.
Located at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, Portland is home to many museums and educational institutions such as the Portland Art Museum, World Forestry Center Discovery Museum, Oregon Historical Society Museum, and the Kendall Planetarium to name a few. Furthermore, apart from ‘Significant Other’, the city has hosted the production of many film projects like ‘Coraline’, ‘Twilight’, ‘Pig’, ‘Into the Wild’ and ‘The OA’.

Several parts of “Significant Other” were recorded in and around Cannon Beach, a coastal town in Clatsop County, Oregon. In an interview with The Gate in early October 2022, Maika Monroe (Ruth) and Jake Lacy (Harry) were asked if they had a tough time filming on location.
Maika said: “It was amazing, beautiful. Every day we showed up, our trailer was like a forest area and I enjoyed it.”
Jake, on the other hand, added, “We hit the beach and stayed at this… sort of 1970s two-story beach hotel, and then the next place we went for a few days, just north of that, was 10 minutes from Cannon Beach, where they filmed the ‘Goonies.’ I’ve never seen topography, flora, and fauna on such a scale.”
