The Perfumier is a crime thriller that explores the dangerous lines between obsession and murder. After a detective is caught wanting to write her own wrong, risks everything to track down the killer who could fix her.
This is a story that makes for an interesting hunt for the killer and creates an interesting connection. One that never feels like it should work. It feels very fantasy rather than the intense thriller it seems to create within itself. Everything seems out of line, more than necessary, and doesn’t address the seriousness of the crimes. Now, know about The Perfumiermovie.
The Parfumier: Movie Synopsis
Sunny Valentin, a police officer, has been transferred to a new city in hopes of staying closer to her lover, Jura. Their relationship was not easy. Juro was married and had two children. Sunny knew about his family but she couldn’t help but fall in love with him. She hoped he would choose her over anyone else, but it was difficult for Jur. She was not only troubled by a troubled relationship, but also by the fact that she had a unique disadvantage; she didn’t feel.
She always felt like she was missing out on a lot of experience. On the contrary, there was a murderer on the loose who murdered young women, shaved their heads, and removed their sweat glands. It was soon deduced that the motive for the murders was to extract pheromones from the bodies.
After following Dorian’s accomplice Rex for several days, the police were convinced that the two had murdered their victims in a bunker in the woods. Sunny was devastated when Juro broke up with her. She devoted all her time to finding the killer. After watching Rex closely for some time, she decided to follow her one morning and reached the house. She called back up and Juro arrived at the scene.
They overheard a heated discussion before entering. Juro and Sunny entered the apartment and grabbed Rex, but Dorian had disappeared. Sunny found a bottle of perfume that Dorian had created using the scent of all the women he had murdered. She couldn’t smell him, but the moment she rubbed it on her wrist, Juro couldn’t resist getting physically close to her. Sunny chose to keep the perfume with her and it was a secret she hoped she would never reveal.
A relationship based on an intoxicating scent could never last long and Sunny knew it, but the comforting presence of Juro in her life was something she didn’t want to give up. Meanwhile, an argument between Dorian and Rex indicated that he was not happy with the perfume he had created. He wanted to create a perfume of love, but he created a perfume that turned people wild to fulfill their intimate fantasies. “The Parfumier” is about Sunny’s journey to regain her sense of smell and Dorian’s dream to create a love for The Perfumier.
The Perfumier Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
After escaping from Sunny, Dorian freed Rex from the forensic psychiatric unit. He did so with a concoction he created that could strike terror into those who inhaled it. The guard collapsed due to a panic attack and Rex left the facility.
Rex wanted the perfume of lust back and Dorian agreed to give it to them after brewing the perfume of love. The perfume of love would be subtle, like the smell of a newborn baby. Dorian couldn’t resist the smell of the baby. He felt it from Sunny’s body. He was even able to predict the age of an unborn child using his sense of smell.
Meanwhile, Sunny was having the best days of her life with Juro. After learning of her pregnancy, they bought a house together in the country. They lived happily there, although Sunny never stopped wearing perfume. She knew she was fooling not only Jura, but also herself, but she couldn’t resist the satisfying result. The intoxication of the perfume took its toll on their health. Sunny’s hands itched while Juro’s nose was bleeding. Sunny wanted to understand Dorian. (The Perfumier)
She knew he had a troubled childhood, so she decided to talk to his father. Dorian’s father was a pastor. He stated that his son was born with an unbearable smell. His stench kept people away from him. The moment Dorian realized that his body odor was the reason people stayed away from him, he tried to scrub it off. Since then, he wanted to create a human scent. He teamed up with his senior at school, Rex, and the two experimented. They tried to create the scent using a chimpanzee sent to the church.
After discovering what his son was up to, he was convinced that Dorian was possessed by the devil. But no matter what he did, his son never stopped being weird. Dorian returned to the place where he and Rex were experimenting. He wanted to reconnect with his childhood memories. He was trying to gather the elements for a love perfume, but he wasn’t sure of the whole formula. He named the last element of his perfume Pearl, and Rex murdered another young woman to extract the pheromones.
Sunny burned Dorian’s temple (childhood experiment site) and this angered him. He knew how desperate Rex was for the perfume of lust, so to get revenge, he revealed that Sunny had the perfume. When Sunny walked into her house, she dropped to the floor. Rex sprayed the room with anesthetic and tied Sunny to a chair. Sunny dropped the perfume on the floor instead of handing it in. Rex doused herself in perfume and walked out into the street where men gathered around her. It was later revealed that Rex had been torn apart.
The perfume intoxicated men to the point that they wanted to consume it. Sunny broke up with Juro as she realized how damaging their relationship was over time. There was a similarity between the lives of Sunny and Dorian; both lost people they relied on. When Sunny was struggling with her life, she kept a small perfume and buried it underground. But it wasn’t easy to get away from Dorian.
He went to her house and asked her to be his muse. Using the perfume of lust, he tried to manipulate her into giving up. But as they were kissing, Sunny stopped and exclaimed that he could never have created perfume because he didn’t know what love was.
Later, Dorian kidnaps Sunny’s neighbor Stephen, whom she cares deeply about. His father was abusive and she did what she could to protect him. When he asked to stay with his girlfriend at her country house, she readily agreed. But she didn’t know that Dorian had been waiting for her to make that mistake. Dorian bonds with perfumer Moritz de Vries, a character played by August Diehl in the 2018 German Netflix series, “Perfume” (which takes place in the same universe).
Moritz, an accomplished perfumer, brought Dorian a machine with which he could extract pheromones without having to cut into the body. The machine extracted the smell through the pores. Dorian kidnapped the lovers from Sunny’s house and left their belongings there for her to come looking for. When she entered the basement, he discussed how it was all a trick to get her there. He wanted Sunny to teach him what true love meant.
He believed that she, her child, and he were destined to be together. Sunny held his hand and crushed the glass sample container of the odorless toxic substance she had been carrying all this time. He would no longer be able to feel anything; he lost his special talent for distinguishing scents and navigating the world using only his sense of smell. (The Perfumier)
Dorion was imprisoned after being found drugged in the basement. Even though he knew that his dream was almost impossible to achieve, he never stopped dreaming of formulating a scent of love that he hoped to spread around the world so that people would no longer hate and only love would endure. Sunny gave birth to her baby. She raised them alone. She was stronger and freer now. She could deal with the worst to protect her child and Dorion was an example of that.
She added that her child need not worry because she has taken care of him. Although Dorion never revealed what the final element of his perfume of love was, we can assume it was Sunny (or “Pearl” as he called it). She could smell her child and it was a smell he could never get over. Maybe the trap was to catch her and her unborn child. He hesitated on the last element, suggesting that it was something even worse than murdering women.
Newborns are loved and adored by everyone and we can assume that this is the scent she wishes to recreate. He had a machine to extract odor through the pores, which made it easier for him to work with the body and experiment. “The Perfumier” dealt with two extreme characters, one who did not smell and the other who was an expert at it. Their paths crossed and even though Sunny could have fallen into the trap of Dorion’s fantasy, she was able to find a way and handle the situation.
Dorian has never experienced love in his entire life. With his perfume, he hoped to completely get rid of hatred and turn the world into a loving place. The disgust and hatred he faced as a child somehow resulted in his insanity.
The film does not delve deep and much remains unsaid and unexposed. It was never made clear what Dorion was waiting for in the temple, nor was it mentioned why Rex murdered another woman and why she was an important element in the making of the Perfume of Love. “The Perfumier.”
