Goodnight Mommy: Movie Synopsis
“Goodnight Mommy.” Twins Elias and Lukas visit their mother in her country house. Their parents separated and the children visit their mother after some time. Their mother doesn’t look like her usual self; she has had plastic surgery and her face is bandaged. As soon as they arrived, she imposed some rules on them: they were not to go into the barn, leave the blinds open, enter her study or bedroom, or make noise. From the beginning, Elias felt that their mother was acting differently.
She wasn’t one to set the rules. They admitted that maybe it was the surgery that made her bitter, but when she refused to sing them a goodnight song, they wondered if it was really their mother under the bandages. Their mother had been singing them goodnight since childhood, but this time she refused. The belief that the woman they lived with was not their mother grew stronger as the days passed.
She tore up the drawing Elias had drawn of him and Lukas holding their mother’s hands. Their mother always saved their drawings. That was unexpected. Elijah decided to look into the barn. He believed his mother was hiding something. There were old toys and comics in the barn, but Elias noticed blood on the wall. Lukas refused and said it could only be the color red.
The twins tried to contact their father, but their mother found out and destroyed their phone. The twins decided to run away. They packed their bags and found shelter in a nearby house. The owner didn’t seem to live there, but because of the heavy rain outside, the brothers decided to stay there. Elias was awakened from his sleep by the police who found them there. The owner noticed the movement using motion sensors and asked the police to find out if someone had trespassed on his property.
The boys tried to explain to the police that the woman they were living with was a fraud and not their mother. Police later received a call from their mother and returned them home. From her conversation with the policeman, we learn that their mother was a celebrity, but her fame faded over time. She lied to the police and claimed she didn’t lay a hand on her son, when in fact she slapped Elijah for refusing to accept her as his mother.
She discussed the problems she was having with her son with the police, but we did not hear that conversation. The situation was now out of control. The twin brothers knew they had to leave, but to do so they had to take care of their mother. They knew her medication made her drowsy, so they tied her hands and feet and asked her where their real mother was. They planned to escape and find their mother, the one who loved them unconditionally.
Goodnight Mommy Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
Elias tied his mother to the bed and asked her if she was his real mother. He refused to believe she was his mother. Even though she apologized for her past mistakes, Lukas was not convinced. Lukas planned to run away from the house with Elias and prepared for it. But Elias was not ready to give up their mother. He asked her why her eyes were not green like in the pictures. She tried to convince him by stating that she wears colored lenses and keeps them in her bag.
Lukas checked the bag and confirmed that he did not find the lens. According to Lukáš, the mother lied, and interrogating her was a waste of time. Her tears didn’t affect him, but Elias became sentimental. Meanwhile, the police came to check on them. He lied to them about his mother saying she wasn’t home. The police were not satisfied with his answer but did not have time to investigate.
Lukas and Elias left their home with their mother tied to the bed and her mouth taped shut. Elias lied to Lukas saying he forgot his toothbrush and was rushing back home. He checked the bag and found the lens. He realized that Lukas had lied to him. Lukas stood behind him asking him to trust him and not believe what his mother said. He had had enough. Pushing Lukas aside, he entered his mother’s room and locked it. He untied her and cried in his mother’s arms, revealing how Lukas had been manipulating him all this time.
His mother hugged him and tried to calm him down. Elijah wanted his mother to help Lukas. Meanwhile, his mother asked him to accompany her to the barn. Meanwhile, Elijah could not find Lukas. As he approached the barn, he felt an overwhelming fear. He didn’t want to face the truth, but his mother encouraged him to look at the blood-stained wall. She reminded him that she was playing with the gun and didn’t know it was loaded. “Goodnight Mommy.”
He accidentally shot Lukas and he died as a result of the accident. She wanted him to distinguish between fantasy and reality. He could not accept the truth; he wanted his mother to stop forcing him to face it. As he yelled at his mother to stop, he pushed her off the ridge. She fell to the ground and the fire from the lantern caught on the hay and in the forest.
The barn was on fire and Elias was running for his life. He tried to understand what had happened; it was too much for him. He looked up and saw his mother. The fire did not hit her and Lukáš was standing behind her. She extended her hand to Elias and the three of them left together, just like the picture Elias had drawn.
Elias could not cope with the death of his brother – twin Lukas. To cope with the loss, he began living in denial. His delusional state of mind led him to imagine that Lukas was by his side as always. His mother refused to play with him. She didn’t acknowledge Lukas’s presence, and to protect his delusion, he began to see his mother as the devil. He knew that by confronting the truth he would lose the comfort of imagination, and he didn’t want that to happen.
That was the reason why he chased away the bloodstain on the barn and let himself believe that it was the color red. He wanted to run away from home and not trust his mother. He had to choose between the real world which was his mother and the fantasy world which was Lukas. Even though he called for help, in the end, he did not accept the truth and pushed his mother away.
His mother became part of his fantasy world. Unable to accept that he was somehow responsible for his mother’s death, he imagined that the barn accident had never happened; it was all a bad dream. He left with his mother and brother. His world was balanced now and he had the people he loved by his side. “Goodnight Mommy.’
