Ally is a student at New York University (NYU) in New York and lives with her father, Neil, an NYPD detective. Tyler Hawkins audits courses at NYU and works in the university bookstore. He and his sister Caroline have a strained relationship with their father, a workaholic businessman, Charles. One night, Tyler and his roommate Aidan get into someone else’s fight and are arrested by Neil.
Aidan calls Charles to save Tyler, but he doesn’t stay to talk to his father. Aidan sees Neil drop Ally off and realizes she’s his daughter. He approaches Tyler with the idea of getting back at the detective by talking him into sleeping around and firing Ally. Tyler and Ally go out to dinner and keep seeing each other.
After noticing a tattoo of “Michael” on Tyler’s chest, Tyler reveals to Ally that his brother Michael died by suicide years ago; In return, Ally reveals that her mother was ambushed and fatally shot when she was young. Aidan shows up at Tyler’s apartment and meets Ally for the first time, convincing the couple to go to a party where Ally drinks too much. The following morning, after a confrontation between her and her father, Ally flees back to Tyler’s apartment, where the pair consummate their relationship.
Caroline, an aspiring artist, is performing in an art show, and Tyler asks his father to enter the show. When he doesn’t show, Caroline is heartbroken and Tyler confronts him in a boardroom full of people, accusing his father of voluntarily distancing himself from his children so he wouldn’t feel the pain of losing another child, and father and son come to blows.
Neil’s partner recognizes Tyler with Ally on the train; so Neil breaks into Tyler’s apartment, discovers his initial reason for meeting Ally, and violently confronts him, forcing Tyler to confess to an upset Ally. Aidan visits Ally at her father’s house to explain that he is to blame and Tyler is genuinely in love with her.
Caroline is bullied by her classmates at a birthday party where they cut off a piece of her hair. Ally and Aidan visit Tyler’s mother’s apartment, where Caroline is sobbing. Tyler walks his sister back to school and after more bullying, Tyler turns violent and ends up in detention. Charles is impressed that Tyler stood up for his sister and they bond. Charles asks Tyler to meet his lawyers at his office.
Tyler spends the night with Ally and they confess their true love. The next morning, Charles calls Tyler to tell him that he will be late because he is driving Caroline to school; Tyler is happy that Charles is spending time with his daughter and tells him that he will be waiting in his office.
He looks at Charles’ computer, which has a slideshow of pictures of Tyler, Michael, and Caroline when they were younger. Caroline arrives in her classroom, where the teacher writes the date on the board as Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Tyler watches from the window of his father’s office, located on the 101st floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
A voice from Tyler’s journal reveals that he loved Michael all along and forgives him for killing himself. Tyler is buried next to Michael. Soon, when Tyler tries to save Caroline from a bunch of bullies on her birthday, he gets into a fight and ends up in custody. This impresses his father, Charles, with how he cares for his sister, and the two are reunited. That night, Ally and Tyler stay together in his father’s office where they confess their love.
The next day, Charles calls Tyler and tells him he’s going to be late because he’s dropping Caroline off at school. He is happy to see that the two have bonded and opens his father’s computer to see a presentation of him, Michael, and Caroline. At Caroline’s school, the teacher writes the date on the board, which is September 1, 2001. As for Tyler, his father’s office is on the 101st floor of the World Trade Center, and we all know how this story ended.
There’s a voiceover from Tyler’s journal where we understand that he forgot about his brother Micahel because he killed himself. The rest of the people he knew move on with their lives as Aidan gets Tyler tattooed on his arm, Ally boards the train where her mother was shot, and Charles and Caroline seem to have a great relationship.
The film opens with the night Tyler and his roommate get into a fight and are arrested by Neil. Later, Charles, who is a rich man, saves the children. Soon, while Neil has to drop Ally off at school, Aidan notices them. He asks Tyler to get back at her father by sleeping with her and then leaves her. This is how Tyler and Ally meet and start seeing each other.
As they walk outside, Ally sees a tattoo on Tyler’s chest that says: Michael. He reveals that it was his brother who died by suicide years ago. This is when the two sleep together. Tyler starts having his own personal issues with his father when he doesn’t show up at the art gallery Caroline was at. Later that night, Neil’s colleague from the NYPD sees Tyler and Ally together on the train and informs him.
That’s why Ally’s father broke into his apartment to find out the real reason he’s dating his daughter. This provokes a confrontation with Ally and she leaves the place heartbroken.
