Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, is a sci-fi thriller Tv series created by Bruce Miller set in a dystopian world where the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual slavery.
One such woman is Offred, who does everything to survive in this unfair world and also embarks on a quest to find the daughter that was taken from her. The fifth season begins immediately after the death of Commander Fred Waterford, as June faces the consequences of being guilty of his murder.
While the widowed Serena struggles to gain visibility, Commander Lawrence joins forces with Aunt Lydia in an attempt to reform the city and rise to power. Where Was The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Filmed?
The fifth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” was filmed exclusively in Ontario, specifically in Brantford, the Greater Toronto Area, Cambridge, and the Niagara Regional Municipality.
Principal photography on the fifth iteration of the dystopian series reportedly began in February 2022 and seemingly wrapped up in August of that year. So let’s not waste time and dive right into all the specific locations that appear in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 series!
Ontario
Many key sequences for the fifth season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale took place in the Greater Toronto Area, a region of 25 urban, suburban, and rural municipalities. The production crew camped out in and around Parkdale Home Hardware at 1372 Queen Street West and filmed several scenes on the street. The University of Toronto at 399 Bathurst Street represented the US Consulate General for Season 5.

In addition, the Lawrence Center for the Arts at 27 Front Street East, Yonge-Dundas Square at 1 Dundas Street East, and the Bridle Path at 25 Park Lane Circle served as important filming locations.
In June 2022, the cast and crew of the Hulu series were spotted filming several scenes in and around the Old Town Hall at 460 Botsford Street and St Paul’s Anglican Church at 227 Church Street, both in Newmarket. Other exteriors for the season were recorded at Market Square and Main Street in the same city.

For season 5, the filming unit used the locations of Brantford, a city in Ontario. The Johnny Be Good Diner at 440 Paris Road and the former tourism center at 399 Wayne Gretzky Parkway are some of the locations where they set up camp to film key scenes for the fifth iteration.

In addition, the cast and crew were spotted filming in and around Victoria Park at 65 Market Street and at the Carnegie Library at 73 George Street, making use of the impressive staircase. Several outdoor scenes were filmed on various streets, including George Street, Wellington Street, Darling Street, and Dalhousie Street.
Additional episodes for season 5 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale were filmed in Cambridge, a city in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario. In May 2022, the team was seen projecting various scenes throughout the city, including Hespeler Village, Galt, Brant Road North, the Living Levee Trail, Fisher Mills Road, and Sheffield Street. In addition, they used the Mill Race Park at 36 Water Street North and the Forbes Estate at 171 Guelph Avenue to film several sequences for the fifth season.

The production team of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ camped in the Niagara Regional Municipality, a regional municipality comprising twelve municipalities in southern Ontario. In Welland, they used the Kingsway Lanes & Restaurant at 215 Riverside Drive and the Welland International Flatwater Center at 16 Townline Tunnel Road to shoot some key scenes. In addition, 11 and 12 King Street in Port Colborne served as important manufacturing sites.
