“No Limit” is beautiful underwater but shallow above it. The real story could have been a riveting watch, but it only started getting interesting in the last few minutes. Roxana Aubrey’s character left no impression; it has a tragic past, yet we will never know the whole of it. The film is visually stunning, but it doesn’t evoke the amount of emotion one would expect from watching what led to the tragic death of freediver Audrey Mestre. Now, know about the No Limit movie.
No Limit: Movie Synopsis
As a child, Roxana went to the beach with her grandfather, who taught her to dive. The calm and peace she experienced underwater were incomparable to worldly pleasures. She studied marine biology in college. One day she noticed a poster of the world-famous freediver Pascal Gautier, who would be giving diving lessons to those interested.
Without thinking about it, Roxana paid the course fee and arrived at the venue on time. There she met Tom, a diving instructor who worked with Pascal. The two shared unmistakable chemistry on the first day of class, but the moment Roxana laid eyes on Pascal, she knew who she wanted. Pascal had an incredible ability to tolerate pain, which is why he was able to withstand the pressure and dive deep into the water.
Roxana was impressed by his calmness and ability, and she couldn’t take her eyes off him during the post-training party. Pascal was a womanizer. Even with his girlfriend by his side, he continued to flirt with Roxana. They made out passionately in the washroom, and after returning, his girlfriend broke up with him.
Pascal taught Roxana techniques to stay underwater. A shared passion for diving brought them together. Roxana felt at peace in Pascal’s presence and wouldn’t trade it for the world. She soon joined Pascal’s team for training. On the very first day, she understood how risky the profession was. While Pascal set out to set a world record by diving 172 meters underwater, his team was deployed on several levels to watch him.
Although Pascal managed to complete the dive safely, one of his team members lost his life. Stephane, a team member, accused Pascal of sending the rookie down 40 meters. The team needed a new member and Roxana stepped in to fill the position. Stephane was against it, knowing how risky it could be for her, but Pascal trusted Roxane’s abilities. He believed that she was a natural and could easily adapt. Roxana learned the security protocol and was ready to help Pascal. On the day of the event, Pascal successfully dived 172m and the team celebrated a new world record. Roxana was on top of the world.
She had never felt so alive. She informed her mother that she would leave her studies to accompany Pascal on his journey. Her mother did not support her decision but refused to listen to her advice. A few days after setting a new world record, another freediver managed to descend 174 meters. Pascal now had to compete and was aiming for 176 meters. But this time luck was not on his side. He suffered a loss of consciousness and the doctor advised him to stop diving.
Pascal didn’t want to give up, and Roxana couldn’t change his mind, knowing how passionate he was about his profession. When he took a break, he introduced Roxana to the world of freediving. She soon set a new record for French women by going 56 m deep in the CWF category. She was celebrated by the media for her success and Pascal watched her from afar. “No Limit” follows the relationship between Pascal and Roxana. A romance that soon turned sour as a result of jealousy and mistrust. “No Limit.”
No Limit Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
Pascal could not accept defeat when a woman set another new world record. He was determined to dive 180m and set a new record, but his team and organizers knew he was not fit enough to do so. As Roxana rose to fame, Pascal felt his importance fade.
Roxana looked up at him; he was her lover and mentor, but he couldn’t take the celebration any longer. He was proud of Roxana but disappointed in himself. He went so far as to state that he would rather watch her set a new world record than let another person do it. It was important for him to be involved either as a participant or as a coach.
Roxana could feel the distance growing between her and Pascal. He often left her at night and she was left alone. Roxana’s childhood was not easy. Her father committed suicide due to depression when she was 12. She always wondered why her father left her and gradually became obsessed with the idea of death. She attempted suicide in the hope of joining her father, but her grandfather saved her life.
We get an idea of how Roxana was searching for the meaning of her existence, and only after meeting Pascal did she realize who she was supposed to be. She emphasized how important Pascal was in her life and how without him in her life, trophies, and titles had no value. But he still didn’t feel it. He wasn’t ready to give up. The competition was more important to him than what he shared with Roxana.
He decided to have Roxana compete in the no-limit category, even though his entire team thought it was a bad idea, but Roxana accepted the challenge. As she trained to prove Pascal right, he cheated on her. Roxana soon found out about his affair and sought comfort in Tom.
The next morning she decided to leave Pascal, but he was adamant not to let her go. He smashed the mirror with his fist and Roxana couldn’t help but feel for him. Later, during their training, Pascal reads a text Tom sent Roxana and learns about their relationship. At the press conference, Roxana noticed the woman Pascal was cheating with in the audience. When she looked at him, she knew he had never mended his ways and abruptly left the conference. She kept to herself and felt the loneliness creeping into her again.
The next day, Roxana was to compete in the No Limit category and go to a depth of 180 meters to set a new world record. Pascal spoke to Tom and informed him that even though they had a few setbacks, he was still counting on him. Pascal went to Roxana to spend a few minutes with her but realized that she was no longer interested in him. Tom noticed Pascal checking the air tanks before the dive.
Seconds before Roxana rushed in, Pascal kissed her on the lips. She dived to 180 m, but when she tried to open the air tank valve to inflate the lift bag, she noticed that it was not working. The cylinder had no air in it, which made it impossible for her to quickly rise to the surface. As much as Tom tried to fill the tank, it wasn’t enough to get her out that fast. She was supposed to stay underwater for three minutes, but she stayed there for over eight minutes.
She realized it was a futile attempt to resurface; her body couldn’t take it anymore. She heard a whale singing and passed out in the calm depths. By the time the security team dived in to save her, it was too late. She was pronounced dead when she surfaced. When police questioned the team, no one revealed what had happened. Although Tom knew that Pascal had a role in Roxanne’s death as he was last seen handling the air tank lift bag. As Tom was about to enter the airport, he noticed Pascal staring at him from afar.
Pascal was involved in Roxane’s death. Perhaps he could not tolerate her indifference and wanted revenge. He knew she could leave him and he would no longer be responsible for her success. This could also be a reason for him to end her life. “No Limit” is dedicated to Audrey Mestre, who lost her life under similar circumstances.
