Locke & Key is an American fantasy horror drama television series developed by Carlton Cuse, Meredith Averill, and Aaron Eli Coleite based on the comic book series of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez. It premiered on Netflix on February 7, 2020. The series stars Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Laysla De Oliveira, Petrice Jones, and Griffin Gluck.
In March 2020, Netflix announced that the series had been renewed for a second season, which premiered on October 22, 2021. In December 2020, prior to the premiere of the second season, the series was renewed for a third season, which premiered on August 10, 2022. In April 2022, it was announced that the third season would be its final season, as planned by the creators.
“Locke & Key” Season 3 is the last season of the series, and in order to properly wrap up the characters and plot, the creators portrayed Captain Frederick Gideon, the originator of all evil, as the main antagonist of Season 3.
In season 2, it was shown that the portal to the second realm, where the magic keys came from, was first opened in 1775 and it was Frederick Gideon who found it, so he could be responsible for bringing demons from another dimension to the human world. At the end of “Locke & Key” season 2, a demon possessing a teenager named Eden Hawkins summoned Gideon’s echo with the Echo key.
Locke & Key Season 3: Recap
As part of the royal army, Captain Frederick Gideon and his regiment arrived in Matheson, Massachusetts to put down a local rebellion. He heard some rumors that a Black Smith named Peter Locke was making colonial weapons for the American revolutionaries, so he decided to check his house. At night, he knocked on Peter’s door when Peter politely asked him to leave the premises, but Gideon and his men attacked Peter and captured his family.
Peter’s younger son Benjamin sought help from the local rebel leader, Captain Richard Crais, who arrived at Locke’s house with his battalion, and Gideon and his men had to flee. He fled to a nearby sea cave with his two most loyal soldiers, Samuel Coffey and James Bolton, where Gideon found a demonic portal that opened to another realm.
However, before they could comprehend the magical world that had opened up to them, Crais and his men, along with Benjamin Locke, attacked them. The revolutionaries killed Gideon’s men, which was when Gideon embraced a demon coming from another realm. A demonic spirit possessed Gideon’s body and gave him superhuman powers, yet he was captured by revolutionaries who hanged him to death.
Before being sentenced to death, Gideon was imprisoned in Locke’s Well. During his imprisonment, he kept a diary in which he mentioned the gate between the two worlds and its awesome power. The journal was found by Gideon’s descendant Josh Bennett, a history teacher who came to Matheson with his daughter Jamie.
Through Bennett’s research work and Gideon’s journal, Gideon’s first encounter with the portal was learned of a demon possessing a student named Eden Hawkins, so she summoned him with the Echo Key. However, once Gideon’s Echo came back to life, he killed Eden Hawkins, whose dead body was later found by Kinsey Locke at the bottom of a well inside a well. Eden may not be Kinsey’s dearest friend or humble classmate, but she and her other friends paid their last respects to Eden, throwing her body into the water so her soul could rest in peace.
Due to the limitations of the Echo Key’s power, the echo could not leave the confines of the well, but Eden also gave Gideon the Anywhere Key to help him escape from prison. He later called his two most loyal minions, Samuel Coffey and James Bolton, and together they decided to steal all the keys from the Locke family. The demon in Gideon’s body believed that these magical keys were part of his/her realm and therefore humans did not deserve them.
However, his main motive for holding all the keys was something else. With each key Gideon possessed, he was able to create a larger portal or gate between the two worlds, believing that once he had all the keys in his possession, he would be able to crush the barriers between the two realms. Once he has fully drawn the demon world into the human world, he commands his demon army to conquer the human world and recreate the world in his image.
Locke & Key Season 3: Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End of The Season?
The Locke family tried many different tactics to defeat Gideon, but when all failed, they finally came to the decision that they needed the Alpha Key to stop Gideon. Tyler forged the Alpha Key in Season 2’s “Locke & Key” to stop Dodge. The key had the power to destroy a demon’s soul in a human’s body, making it their most lethal weapon against Gideon, who was an echo possessed by one of the most powerful demons.
During the climax, Kinsey used this creation to create a small pocket on Harlequin’s chest, inside which Gideon had all the magic keys along with the Alpha Key. Later, Gideon was stabbed by Alpha with a key, and Tyler and Nina pushed Gideon back into his realm.
However, at the moment, Gideon had two keys with him that caused the portal to shrink a bit, and Tyler figured that the only way to close the portal forever was to sacrifice all of the magical keys. It was a hard decision, but they finally made it because it was these magic keys that caused all the problems in their lives and also took their father’s life.
Before sacrificing the keys, Bode wanted to use the Timeshift Key one last time to meet his father in the past, and the whole family traveled back in time to meet Rendell Locke. For the family, it was a happy reunion that gave them enough strength to face the dangers of the future, and he remembers his father as one of the good memories of his life. Once they returned to their original timeline, Nina used the Memory Key on Bode and Kinsey to remember the existence of the magic keys even after they turned 18.
According to the series, people would forget the use of magic or any memory it created, so in order to remember the keys and their magical effects, Duncan created the Memory Key. The same key had already been used on Nina and Tyler, so they too would remember the magic keys forever in their lives. Finally, at the end of “Locke & Key” season 3, the Locke family threw all the magical keys into the portal and the portal was closed.
They all decided to move on with their lives and returned to normal life. However, in the absence of the Memory Key, friends of the Locke family, except for Ellie, would soon forget about the existence of magic keys, and maybe that would be for the better.
In “Locke & Key” Season 3, Duncan Locke married the love of his life, Brain, and moved out of the Keyhouse. He already despised magic keys because of them he had seen too many deaths in his life, including the murder of his brother, Rendell. Duncan was more than happy to learn that the era of magic keys was finally over and the next generation of the Locke family would not have to witness the kind of mischief they cause.
On the other hand, Tyler was still dealing with the death of his girlfriend Jackie Veda, who was possessed by a demon in season 2 and thus had to be killed. It was because of these keys that Jackie had to lose her life and somewhere Tyler blamed himself for her death. He decided to leave Matheson to overcome his grief and move on with his life. In Montana, he met a girl named Carly and slowly fell in love with her. After the keys were sorted out, Tyler decided to go on a trip with Carly to accept their future together.
Nina has also acquired a new lover in the history teacher, Josh Bennett. At first, Bode struggled to accept Josh into his mother’s life, but at the end of “Locke & Key” Season 3, he finally came to terms with his father’s death and decided to welcome Josh into the family. Nina and Josh can also get married. We never know. Ellie Whedon also decided to stay back in Matheson with her son Rufus. She even returned as a sports coach at Matheson Academy, while the school administration paid their last respects to Gordie Shaw by naming the theater after him.
And last but not least, Kinsey finally made her slasher film, which premiered in the local theater as well. Her lover Scot Cavendish also attended the premiere and the love between them blossomed further. Scot will probably become a successful filmmaker one day, and perhaps Kinsey will be an actress in his films, but neither Scot nor any of Kinsey’s friends remembered the magic of the keys.
Before they closed the door on the key house for the last time, the creators teased the whispering of the keys. Although it’s probably over for the current Locke family. Maybe we’ll get a spin-off series from the creators set in the same universe. So far, it’s a happy ending for everyone.
