Carter: Movie Synopsis
People became infected with a deadly virus, the symptoms of which appeared in the human body in just 5 minutes. Those who were infected displayed abnormal and enhanced physical abilities. They were turning into something like zombies, the only difference being that they were more agile and stronger than ever before. The United States has been affected by soldiers who have returned after serving in Korea.
A huge part of North Korea’s population was also affected by the virus. On the other hand, South Korea has been declared a virus-free zone by the World Health Organization. It was called the DMZ virus because it originated in the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Dr. Jung Byeong-ho had an important role in all this chaos. He was missing for almost 19 days with his daughter Jung Ha-na.
Dr. Jung cured his daughter of the virus, and doctors and researchers around the world wanted to know how he did it. Dr. Jung was headed to the Sinuiju Chemical Weapons Institute to mass produce the antidote so that the people of North Korea could be saved. But now that he was missing, the North Koreans suspected that the South had a role to play.
The CIA obtained a video of a naked man standing next to Dr. Jung. He gave them the address and claimed that Dr. Jung was still with him. CIA agents arrived at the scene, but the man did not remember anything. He had no idea when he sent the video. Adding to this mystery was that the man did not know who he was. There was a pool of blood in the room that led to the closet. A bell rang from the closet.
He picks up the phone where the anonymous caller tells him his name is “Carter” and then asks him to pass it to the CIA agent behind him. As soon as the man gave the phone to the agent, it exploded, killing her. The man was told to run from the building because the anonymous caller had also blasted it. She told him that they had implanted a device in his ear so he could hear her voice. A man jumped from this building to an adjacent one.
He still couldn’t figure out what was happening to him. The building next door was probably a spa/spa and there were a lot of men there who started staring at him. They attacked him, but somehow he managed to handle them on his own. This made him realize that he was no ordinary person as only a trained professional could have such skills. The voice in his ear kept guiding him as she had access to security camera footage and could also detect heat signatures within 50 meters.
She tells him to go to the car that was approaching to get more information. In the car, he meets Choi Yu-jin, who works for the National Intelligence Service (NIS) in South Korea. The woman talking into his ear was Han Jung Hee, who worked for the International Liaison Department in North Korea. She said they are working with South Korea to develop an antidote to the DMZ virus.
Han Jung Hee tells him that they have secured enough anthrax vaccines for Dr. Jung to carry out his research and development without any difficulty. But Ha-na was kidnapped, and they knew an agent from A9, a secret organization linked to the CIA, was behind it.
Carter’s mission was to find and bring Ha-na to North Korea. Jung Hee made another revelation that completely shocked Carter. The mission was suggested by Carter himself, who told them to block his memory. He doesn’t understand why he would do that. Jung Hee tells him that he used to be a CIA agent from South Korea.
He camouflaged his identity and entered North Korea as a journalist. He was a celebrated soldier in the South, but the North Korean government suspected him of being an American spy. They wanted to keep a close eye on him, so they put the woman down and told her to find out about him. But Carter and this North Korean spy fell in love and eventually married.
Han Jung Hee tells him that his wife died because of the virus, but his daughter Yoon Hee, although infected with it, was still alive. She was held in a research facility at the Sinuiju Chemical Weapons Institute. The mission was simple. He had to save Hana so that her blood could be used to make an antidote and eventually given to her daughter and her ilk to cure their infection.
Carter Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
Carter met Kim Jong Hyeok, a lieutenant general, and Han Jung Hee, the woman who spoke on the device implanted in his ear. Carter’s mission was now complete, and as promised by the North Korean government, his memento was to be returned to him once Ha-na was in their possession. But Kim Jong Hyeok had other plans. He was the leader of the coup in North Korea.
He knew he could use the situation to his advantage. He stabbed the North Korean government and wanted to have some influence on the regime of South Korea and the United States. He does not restore Carter’s memory and orders his men to kill him. Han Jung Hee, the voice in Carter’s ear, was a North Korean spy who was told to keep an eye on him when he arrived in the country as a journalist.
Han Jung Hee was his wife and she didn’t die as he was told before. Jung Hee pleads with Kim Jong Hyeok to spare Carter’s life and let them leave the country as decided earlier. But Kim Jong Hyeok’s ruthless ambitions to rule the country and create a new world where he was the uncrowned emperor were not deterred.
Carter is once again able to defy death and escape by killing all the North Korean soldiers. One of them received a call from Kim Jong, who ordered that Carter be kept alive, although he did not know that Carter had already killed everyone there and was coming for him. He reaches the Sinuiju Chemical Factory, standing by and looking at Kim Jong through his sniper lens. He calls Hang Jung Hee and asks her to leave her phone on speaker so he can hear what they were talking about.
Kim Jong told his soldiers to wait and not kill Carter until he gave them the order because he wanted to lure Han Jung Hee to side with him. He was giving her an offer to save Carter and her daughter in exchange for her loyalty to him. Kim Jong Hyeok didn’t let them go because there was a threat that they would tell everything to the United States government and then the world would know about his secret plan and everyone would look at him with complete carelessness and disrespect.
Also, if Carter, the man who saved North Korea from the wrath of the virus, stood by Kim Hyeok’s government, people would look up to his leadership. But Han Jung Hee disagrees and Kim Hyeok points a gun at her. Carter fires his sniper but misses the mark. Wasting no time, he takes off from the cliff in his car and drives into the chemical plant.
Carter and Han Jung Hee find their daughter and take her to Dr. Jung Byeong-ho inside the device, who immediately gives her the antidote. Carter and Han Jung Hee, Yoon Hee, Dr. Jung, and Ha-na escape the facility and run for their lives. Dr. Jung unties the stitches on the back of his neck and puts on a device that restores all his memories. Suddenly he remembers everything. He was trying to escape from North Korea with Han Jung Hee and his daughter when Kim Hyeok came with forces and stopped him midway.
Carter knew there was no way out of this situation. The North Korean government would probably let him go, but they would never let one of their own, i.e. Han Jung Hee, leave them. So Carter makes them an offer. He tells them that if they agreed to release his wife and daughter, then he would get Ha-na out of CIA custody and bring her back to North Korea. Kim Jong Hyeok agrees but infects Yoon Hee’s daughter so Carter doesn’t play with them. Now that he had fulfilled his end of the promise, Kim Jong had a change of heart.
Kim Jong Hyeok’s men catch them. Carter takes Yoon Hee and Ha-na with him, while Han Jung Hee and Dr. Jung tries to stop the forces. Carter kills hundreds of soldiers again and so does Kim Jong Hyeok. He saves his family as well as Dr. Jung and his daughter Ha-na. Together they boarded a train carrying infected people and went to Dandong, China. They thought they had ended their horrors, but they weren’t. A surprise awaited them in the very next step.
