A 22-year-old woman named Martha has been living as a cult member in the Catskill Mountains for some time. Cult leader Patrick gave her the name Marcy May after initiation. Finally, she decides to escape and escapes into the woods and arrives in a nearby town. At the restaurant, she is confronted by Watts, a cult member, who tries to convince her to return, but when she refuses, he lets her go. Martha calls her sister Lucy, who picks her up and takes her to the Connecticut lake vacation home she shares with her husband, a successful and wealthy architect named Ted.
