American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 2: Synopsis

American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 2, The show’s narrative must remind viewers of “Stepford Wives,” even if the satire in “Dollhouse” isn’t particularly subtle. Van Writ is the epitome of a capitalist and patriarchal society that clearly seeks to subjugate women and turn them into emotionless mannequins.

The appearance of two witches who seem to represent feminist individuality reinforces this notion towards the end of the episode. They rescue Cody and lead her and Otis away before setting Van Writ’s house on fire, killing both Van Writ and Eustace. American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 2.

American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 1: Recap

American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 1 opens with Cody arriving at Van Writ’s (Denis O’Hare) factory for an interview as his secretary. It is immediately apparent to Van Writ that she is more than qualified for the job. Instead of hiring her, however, he calls his henchman Eustace (Matt Lasky), who knocks Cody out with a cattle prod.

When he regains consciousness, Cody finds himself inside a strange house surrounded by several life-sized dolls. Van Writ cryptically tells her that she has to be there for about seven days as a pageant contestant. When Cody tries to escape, he finds all the doors and windows closed.

After Van Writ and Eustace leave, the dolls come to life. It turns out they were also kidnapped by Van Write. Some came to the interview just like Cody. Others caught Van Writ’s attention. Van Writ’s previous wife cheated on him. When he found out, he had Eustace kill her and her lover by throwing them into a well on the property.

The other girls explain to Cody that the winner of the competition will become Otis’ new mother. One of the girls, Aurelia (Abby Corrigan), is extremely hostile towards Cody and believes it is unfair that he can join so late in the competition. There were other girls before Cody arrived, but they were all killed and thrown into the well, not always in that order.

Every time Van Writ visits—with or without Otis—it’s a test for the girls. They are not allowed to speak without being spoken to first. After each test, one of the girls is killed. Cody appears to have the ability of telekinesis, which she hid from Van Write, though she uses it to gain Otis’s favor.

With only Cody, Aurelia, and another girl, Harlene, left, they decide they must at least try to escape. They use the real dolls in the house as a distraction while Cody opens the main door with his powers. Although the other girls flee once outside, Cody decides to save Otis.

Eustace catches and kills the other girls, making Cody the winner. Van Writ later reveals that he planted listening devices in some of the dolls and knew about the girls’ escape plan. He decided to use it as a final test. When Cody returned for Otis, she won the competition. He then wraps her in plastic and turns her into a doll. Next is American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 2.
