Ghost Doctor is a 2022 South Korean Tv series directed by Boo Seong-Cheol and starring Rain, Kim Bum, Uee, and Son Na-Eun. The series revolves around two doctors from extreme backgrounds and skills merging into one person. It aired from January 3 to February 22, 2022, on Mondays and Tuesdays on TVN at 10:30 PM (KST) for 16 episodes. It is available for streaming on TVING, iQiyi, and Netflix.
The series revolves around two doctors from extreme backgrounds who have completely opposite personalities and medical skills: Cha Young-min (Rain) is a brilliant doctor and a highly skilled cardiothoracic surgeon, but he is arrogant and selfish. Go Seung-tak (Kim-Bum), has excellent medical knowledge but is hindered by his fear of blood. Ghost Doctor Season 1: Synopsis
Ghost Doctor Season 1, Cha Young-Min is hailed as one of the best surgeons in his hospital. Young-Min tries to save every patient he takes on. Due to being bullied by the other doctors for his genius, he developed a petty persona to save himself. While handling Chairman Jang Kwang-Deok’s surgery, Cha Young-Min meets with an accident that puts him in a comatose state.
His soul detaches from his body and he wanders around until he meets Go Seung-Tak, an intern who has just started his internship at the hospital. Coincidentally, Young-Min can possess Seung-Tak and he uses this to his advantage, testing it on himself first. He then makes a deal with Seung-Take and proceeds to save the lives of emergency patients who come to the hospital for treatment. Eventually, Young-Min wakes up from his coma and returns to his normal life.
Cha Young-Min initially refused to operate on Chairman Jang Kwang-Deok, but after being repeatedly urged, he undertook the operation and successfully completed it. While waiting for the Chairman to wake up, he received an urgent message from his ex, Jang Se-Jin, who is also the Chairman’s daughter.
He left his patient; however, the chairman encountered complications as soon as he was heading to the hospital. On his way, however, he met with an accident that threw him into a coma and ended up in a ghost-like state. He wandered around until he realized he could have Go Seung-Tak and used that to his advantage.
Cha Young-Min possessed Seung-Tak whenever he needed to operate on any patient without his permission. This angered Seung-Tak and he called for a break. Seung-Tak has been able to see and also communicate with spirits since his childhood after he and his father met in a boating accident. This accident greatly affected Seung-Tak, leaving him fatherless and with the ability to interact with spirits.
Seung-Tak started working at the hospital after his grandfather, who was the chairman of the hospital, and his mother, the hospital director, insisted on his internship there. At work, he finally admitted that he could see Young-Min after being provoked. He then agreed with Young-Min to operate on patients in the emergency room as well as patients whom Young-Min promised safe surgery.
While Seung-Tak and Young-Min were concentrating on the patients, they discovered an even bigger game. They discover that Young-Min’s accident was not an accident, but rather an attempt to sabotage his operation to become president. The Chairman’s operation was successful; however, people involved in this foul play administered drugs that left the chairman in a coma.
These people also didn’t want Young-Min to wake up to sabotage everything. Both Young-Min and Seung-Tak try to re-examine every nook and cranny to find evidence and leave no stone unturned to find the culprit. He discovers that Dr. Ahn, Seung-Won, the assistant director, and Min-ho, the president’s son. Young-Min and Seung-Tak set out to prove all the evidence so they can turn the perpetrator over to the police.
Young-Min was mentored by Dr. Ahna and was preparing him for the position of the chief physician. However, Ahn had no idea what Young-Min had done for him, instead believing that Han Seung-Won was helping him sabotage operations on the President. He stabbed Young-Min and worked with Seung-Won until he realized that he single-handedly ruined any chance he had of becoming a successful doctor after Seung-Won fired him after doing his job.
Realizing his mistake and unable to find a way out, Ahn turned to his mentor to help him regain his honesty and follow the right path. Young-Min took pity on him and searched for him with the help of Seung-Tak. They came up with a plan to legally kill Seung-Won and Min-Ho.
Ahn met with Seung-Won to discuss their next plans and recorded him in the meantime, which served as hard evidence against them. Ahn then confessed and served his time in prison, sentencing both Min-Ho and Seung-Won at the same time. He was arrested along with Min-Ho and Seung-Won and the whole affair came to light. However, the arrests were made behind closed doors to protect the hospital and its residents. Ghost Doctor Season 1.
Ghost Doctor Season 1: Ending Explained: What Happened At The End of The Season?
While Seung-Tak could communicate with spirits while in a coma, once they awoke from the coma, the patients forgot all interactions and resumed their previous lives. Seung-Tak dreaded the day Young-Min would wake up and forget every moment they shared and their friendship.
While he was nervous, he found out that Young-Min made a video that helped him remember and accept the friendship they shared, as well as the important discussions he was supposed to have with his girlfriend Se-Jin. Led by Young-Min and supported by Tess, Seung-Tak performed the surgery with the help of Dr. Ahna, who secured his spot on the team to make sure Min-Ho and Seung-Won couldn’t hurt Young-Min. anyway.
The operation was successful and Young-Min woke up, pretending not to remember anything that happened as a means of pranking. However, his facade cracks when Seung-Tak barges in to show him the video he made and wants him to memorize everything himself.
Seung-Tak was desperate not to lose the mentor and best friend he found in Young-Min, and because of the situations that bound them together, Young-Min ended up remembering everything. They then decided to set the record straight and ensure that the perpetrators were caught. Dr. Ahn checked in and also implicated both Min-Ho and Seung-Won.
Tess ended up possessing the maid and ended up gifting Soo-Jung with a cake to take to her on the day of her death as a means to come to terms with everything and move on from this realm. He also stayed back to take care of his best friend, Chairman Go Jae-sik, Go Seung-tak’s grandfather and the founder of the hospital. Judging that the hospital was in good hands, he watched Young-Min and Seung-Tak and decided to move on.
“Ghost Doctor” Season 1 is a joy to watch as the various characters absolutely tug at the heartstrings of the audience and the plot of people becoming obsessed with helping others while investigating the mystery on the side is totally refreshing. The Korean drama industry seems to churn out gems every time it decides to drop a release.
