Jojo had a good time in Tulum with Daniel; they sat together and discussed life throughout the flight. Daniel was present whenever Paula video called Jojo. She was often busy or sometimes the network was weak, leaving Paula feeling more lonely than ever. Paula lost her motivation to go about her daily life. She would often just grunt as she lay almost lifeless, showing the emptiness she felt without Jojo by her side. In addition to the emotional emptiness, she also had to deal with the practicalities of life, in which she relied on Jojo.
She was unemployed and needed a job to pay the rent now. She tried several jobs but hardly stuck with them for long. When she turned to the employment office for help, she was offered a job as a janitor at a bowling alley. Paula studied law for six years but gave up her career after failing her final exam. She took a job at the bowling alley, though she desperately called Jojo whenever she felt down.
The fact that Jojo wasn’t suffering the way she was was all the more painful. She was enjoying her time in another country, while Paula felt that her existence was meaningless. She didn’t want to share Jojo and their friendship with anyone else, and now that they were staying apart, she doubted she was losing her a little more every day. But soon Jojo called her saying she was coming back to Berlin.
Paula was excited but also curious as to the reason for her sudden decision, but Jojo chose not to reveal the reason. Paula was her usual animated self when she spotted Jojo at the airport, though her excitement faded the moment she saw Daniel accompanying her. This was not what she had hoped for. Paula wondered if her best friend was pregnant and maybe that was why she came back.
Jojo rejected her guess but refused to give the real reason. Paula couldn’t take it anymore and stopped the car in the middle of the road and waited for Jojo to answer her question. Although Jojo didn’t want to share the news right away, she realized it was impossible to keep the truth from Paula. She replied that she was getting married. Paula was dumped because she refused to accept that Jojo wanted to get married. She left Daniel and Jojo in the middle of the road and left.

Although she didn’t want to give up yet, she announced that she would accompany the couple as well. And so began Paula’s attempt to somehow interfere with their relationship.

She had to leave, but she couldn’t. She knew no place other than home, except for Jojo.
Jojo came to visit Paula on campus. Ellin wanted to discuss it with her boyfriend, but there was a shift in his temperament and he refused to talk about her. Jojo thought that Ellin would directly ask about her past, but she felt that she would be cheating on her boyfriend if she took that step. Paula suggested they go visit Jojo’s mother.
Her mother committed suicide as a result of a failed marriage and they went there to pay their respects. Paula reminded Jojo that her mother suffered in her marriage and should not be in the same position. Although they argued, Jojo refused to accept being in the same position. She stated that relationships are complicated and it is not easy to leave a person.
The guy she met at the airport wasn’t the same cheerful man on the island, but she didn’t want to give up on love. Disturbed by her best friend’s state of denial, she screamed her name out loud, mockingly implying that the Jojo she knew had died.
Paula visited Ellin while drunk. She had apologized for their behavior before. Ellin accepted, adding that she and Daniel were technically still together. Next thing we know, Paula takes Ellin to Daniel and Jojo’s house. They were having a house party and she introduced Ellin as her guest. Jojo was surprised by the sudden turn of events, as was Daniel, who now wanted to discuss things with Jojo. Ellin stated that she was still in a relationship with Daniel, which he denied.
Ellin went on to say that he didn’t end their relationship and just stated that he needed space. While Daniel believed that this was enough to end their relationship, Ellin thought that the fact that he continued texting during the time he was with Jojo said otherwise. Even as Daniel and Jojo were planning their wedding, he continued to write to Ellin. He explained that he cares about her and doesn’t want to hurt her. Jojo was furious, but Daniel believed he had no reason to be angry about the whole situation since it wasn’t about her. Finally, Jojo drives off in her car and Paula leaves.
Paula threw dirt at Jojo’s car, causing her to get out of the car and push Paula into a ditch. Finally, they got into the car together. Paula tried to wipe the tears from Jojo’s face. Paula explained how the man was not right for her and how she saved her best friend from a terrible decision. Jojo was disappointed with how Paula exposed the drama in front of everyone.
She was so tired that she followed her wherever she went. She believed that Paula had to let her live her life and make her mistakes. Jojo wanted Paula to have her own life, but she didn’t care much for him. They shared one last dance on the beach, but in the end, Paula seemed to be alone in the vast landscape. The screen fades to black and a second later reveals that a wedding is taking place. Jojo and Daniel get married on the beach and are surrounded by their loved ones except for Paula.
The ending of “For Jojo” can be interpreted in different ways, but what is strongly felt is the loneliness that Paula experiences at the end. She tried to protect her best friend, but if the wedding can be considered real and not a fragment of fantasy, then it seems that Jojo held on to her belief that she deserves to make her own decisions and mistakes in her life.
And Paula didn’t feel the same way, so we didn’t see her in the wedding procession. The wedding may also be Jojo’s idea of what could have been after she left her relationship and chose Paula. Although I felt that eventually, life forced them to go their own way.
Paula had to learn to allow her best friend to make her mistakes, even though it hurt her to see how she had changed. She had to focus on herself, something she ignored, making Jojo the center of her universe. “For Jojo” deals with the difficult feeling of having to let someone go, even when you think it’s not for the right reasons.
