“Dear Friend” brings that distinction to light—something we’ve never considered before. While the first half of the film plays out like a less interesting version of ‘Bangalore Days’, it’s the second half that really pulls us in and immerses us in the narrative.
While going through “Dear Friend,” we were forced to ask what the writers were thinking when they came up with the concept. It can all be summed up in one line: “What if your best friend has no affection for you and only cares about what you can do for him?” Because that’s exactly what this whole story is. Now, know about the Dear Friend movie.
Dear Friend: Synopsis
“Dear Friend” opens with Jannat, Arjun, Sajith, and Shyam celebrating Vinod’s birthday by making him dress up in a very tacky Superman costume. We see tight-knit groups of friends having a lot of fun in Bangalore. While at the party, they run into trouble when Vinod asks Sajith not to take his picture, as everyone seems to be going live on someone else’s Instagram.
This causes an argument between them and other people that lands them in jail. As they return home after the night’s events, Vinod promises Jannat that it is now his turn to make fun of them on their birthday.
Days pass and Vinod is very involved in the lives of all his friends. He is one of the founders of a start-up with them, with Shyam as the lead investor. In fact, all of them managed to secure funding of Rs 1 crore for their business. He is also the person who gives Sajith the confidence to trust his abilities when he is going through a tough time.
Sajith feels bad about his employability range due to his poor language skills, Vinod tells him that his language is coding and he should be proud of it. He even goes so far as to take care of him when Sajith falls ill after a night of drinking. He lends him 2 lakh rupees when he needs it to build his house.
Vinod also plays a central role in the love story of Arjun and Jannat. Jannat is said to be the closest of the group and looks at her like she’s the one who got away. But when Jannat and Arjun face opposition from her father for their marriage, he encourages them to take the plunge and follow their own path. As for Shyam, he doesn’t want to join his father’s business and wants to do something of his own. Vinod stands by him like a rock and supports his ambitions.
To all his friends he is a guy and one of the best friends they could ask for. He told them that his mother died of cancer a few years ago and he couldn’t get over it. This also earns him the sympathy of his friends. But everything ends suddenly when one day he disappears from their lives, leaving behind a single letter thanking them for the memories.
At first, Jannat assumes that Vinod’s disappearance is a prank he is planning on her birthday. But when the police come looking for him, he realizes that things are more serious. He was accused of embezzling Rs 70 lakhs from the previous company he worked for.
The friends are forced to reevaluate everything they knew about him. They realize that they didn’t know any of his other friends and that in all the time they’ve known him, they’ve never met his family. Shyam is particularly caught between a rock and a hard place when the investors tell him to choose between returning their money or signing the deal.
He arranges the money by borrowing it from his older brother, but not without listening to his misplaced trust. Sajith on the other hand finds another job as he is not from a rich background like his friends and his family is in dire need of money. Jannat and Arjun are also quite heartbroken over Vinod’s disappearance.
They eventually manage to track down one of his friends in Mumbai, who tells them he’s been through something similar. Vinod stood by him like a rock when his mother died and disappeared the very next day, without any rhyme or reason. They also find Vinod’s mother, who he told them was dead. She says that she has not seen her son for a long time and he is like death to her.
Dear Friend Ending Explained: What Happened At The End?
Days pass and everyone goes on with their lives. Sajith spots Vinod one fine day in a cafe in Bangalore. He calls his other friends and they all gather to wait for him, though Shyam refuses to come as he doesn’t trust his own temperament.
They wait for him all day and finally spot him going to another house. Sajith, Arjun, and Jannat follow him and find him living with several people, just as they all lived together before. They talk to him and see a completely different version of the person they once knew as their best friend.
The person in front of them is honest that he was with them on the run from the police and when the authorities started to close in on him, he ran away. He says he owes Shyam an apology, so Jannat asks him why he doesn’t think the others deserve an explanation. He is flippant about it and makes it clear that he was with them for a purpose; he played a role for his own safety.
Friends are shocked. They don’t recognize the person in front of them and say the same thing. But as expected, Vinod doesn’t care. As they leave, Jannat asks him what story he told his current group. He replies, “Same story, never fails.” This means that even his current group of friends think he’s lost his mother and operate with a similar dynamic to his previous group.
At work, he was a charming sociopath who could fool a psychologist like Jannat, all because she trusted him. And so ends “Dear Friend”, with Shyam, Jannat, Sajith, and Arjun coming to the realization that they never had a friend – they only had a criminal they were harboring.
