Hello, Goodbye, And Everything In Between: Synopsis
“Hello, Goodbye, And Everything In Between.” Clare, a high school graduate who recently moved back to a west coast town, is convinced by her old friend Stella to attend a Halloween party. Meeting Aiden after a short conversation takes over the stage and sings karaoke.
Clare and Aiden have instant chemistry and leave the party together and have a spontaneous date. After her parents divorced, she moved from state to state and never made many friends. Clare, therefore, decided to focus on her studies to become a lawyer and help people.
Aiden is the opposite, his parents are stable and still married, both doctors. Although he wants to be a professional musician, they would prefer him to become a doctor.
From stealing candy from the local store, they enjoy the playground on the way back. Aiden senses a spark and leans in for a kiss, but Clare declares that she doesn’t want a boyfriend (as her parents were high schoolers who got married but soon divorced).
Aiden suggests a breakup deal: if they’re still together by the end of next summer, they’ll break up after a grand final date. Clare takes a liking to this plan, they kiss and they begin a high school romance.
At the end of the summer, the day before Clare’s trip to Dartmouth, at a barbecue with both families, they were told they were naive to give up on love. However, Aiden planned their last date, a total surprise. He hopes that the perfect night will make them stay together.
The first stop is a musical performance by Aiden’s old band. And on the first date he performed for her, they dance to the song and cherish the memory.
Next, Aiden takes Clare to the ice rink to make amends. There they had their first fight over his need to be perfect. He admits he lied then and they play hockey together.
The third stop is on a motorboat, a reminder of the water sports day. Clare jumped out of the raft, and when she successfully swam to him, Aiden confessed his love for her. She replied, “Easy-breezy.” Their friend Scotty noted that Clare had taken off in a rocket, and to freeze the memory he gave her a key ring in the shape of a rocket with the words written on the back.
The endless gestures of love gradually overwhelm Clare and she begins to doubt herself. At the place where they celebrated Valentine’s Day, trying to survive the day, he texts Stella to join them.
When Aiden reappears in a tuxedo, he sees that Stella has joined what was supposed to be their perfect date. Now turned into a friendly dinner with Stella and Scotty, when Scotty mentions that he didn’t tag the school wall, Clare insists that they broke into the school for him.
Although Clare hopes that no one will realize her intention, Aiden asks Stella to stop the act, knowing that Clare is trying to derail their romantic date.
Clare tells Scotty that she was hoping for a clean break with Aiden, but he’s having a hard time seeing it. He believes that going to his dream college, Berklee would make it easier for him. Because he is looking forward to university life.
An alarm goes off and Aiden injures his hand trying to escape. His mother is taking care of him in the hospital. Clare finds out he wasn’t accepted at Berklee and is furious. When she confronts him for not telling her, tired of his dishonesty, she doubts if he even intended to say goodbye. They spend most of the night apart at the party.
When Aiden expresses his love for her, Clare can’t say the same. Aiden leaves heartbroken, feeling that their relationship is truly over.
Clare’s mother helps her realize that a relationship can’t work if it decides the end before it even begins. Intending to end things on the right note with Aiden, she texts him to meet her. Confessing her love, they swim to the buoy together. Afterward, Aiden admits that he agrees with her now, even though it hurts. He’s taking a year off to LA to pursue music.
Clare leaves for New Hampshire the next morning, concentrating on her studies, though she regularly checks Aiden’s social media updates. LA musician releases song online. When they decide to meet again during Clare’s summer break, they meet on the playground, just like the first time they met.
Hello, Goodbye, And Everything In Between Ending Explained: What Happened At The End?
When Aiden approached Clare at the restaurant after changing into his tuxedo, he noticed that Stella had joined what was supposed to be their perfect date. The dinner date had now turned into a friendly dinner with Stella and Scotty who worked at the restaurant. Scotty mentioned that he hadn’t marked the school wall and Clare suggested that they do so before the day was over. Aiden was visibly irritated by the change of plans but agreed to break into Scotty’s school at Clare’s insistence.
Even though Clare thought she would escape anyone noticing her true intent, Aiden knew what was going on. He asked Stella to stop the act, knowing that Clare was simply trying to derail their romantic date. Clare discussed with Scotty how she hoped for a clean break, to which Scotty replied that it was always going to be a mess no matter what they tried.
Clare thought they could break up easily if she knew he was going to his dream college Berklee because it would be easier for him. Her college life was what she was looking forward to and she believed that if Aiden had a similar passion it would be easier.
Aiden injured his arm while running from the school building after the alarm was triggered. He was taken to the hospital and his mother took care of him. When Aiden was released, Clare spoke to his mother. She expressed how her son didn’t get into Berklee but was looking forward to having Clare in his life. Aiden never shared this information with Clare and she was furious at his need to always be the perfect version of himself.
She confronted him and said how tired she was of his dishonesty and doubted if he even intended to say goodbye. At the party, they spent most of the night apart, and to end it on a happy note, Aiden decided to play music for her, but that made Clare even angrier. Aiden admitted that he never took the deal seriously and was desperate to save their relationship.
Clare, on the other hand, meant it. She never wanted to go to college in a relationship. Aiden tried to make Clare realize how love can’t be controlled and things change sometimes even when she didn’t plan on it. But Clare refused to accept it. She believed she was realistic. She also hated his guts for not telling her the truth that he had applied to Berklee and failed.
She believed she could have suggested to him other alternatives to a music career, but he chose to keep it a secret because he was ashamed of his failure. She wanted him to be honest, and the fact that he continued to portray an image of perfection bothered her. When Aiden expressed his love for her, she couldn’t say the same. Aiden was heartbroken and left knowing that their relationship was truly over.
Clare’s mother helped her realize that a relationship could never work if they decided it was over before it even started. Intending to end things with Aiden on the right note, Clare texted him to meet her. She confessed her love to him and they decided to swim to the buoy, a graduation tradition.
After swimming to the buoy, Aiden expressed that he now agreed with Clare; he believed he was right even if it would hurt. He decided to take a year off and go to LA to pursue his musical ambitions. Clare left for Vermont the next morning.
Clare focused on her studies, although she always checked Aiden’s social media updates. Aiden worked as a musician in LA and released his own song online. After Clare texts him how much she loves his music, the two decide to meet up again during Clare’s summer break. They met in the park just like the first time they met.
Finally, “Hello, Goodbye, And Everything In Between” hints that the two might be together romantically, given how they’ve managed to stay in touch even after the breakup. They were visibly excited to exchange text messages, even in their busy lives.
Although what Clare suggested was necessary considering how Aiden could work on his interest and not settle for life just to save his love that he would never enjoy. It was an arrangement that helped them realize that their individual interests were paramount and that if they really fell in love, then they would surely find a way to make it work without jeopardizing their careers. “Hello, Goodbye, And Everything In Between.”
