Along For The Ride: Synopsis
Auden had high expectations for her father, but when she arrived in Colby, she found him locked in his classroom, busy with the book he had intended to complete. He did not have time to spend with her, and that was a great disappointment to Auden. Her stepmother, Heidi, was an amazingly beautiful woman who was proud of her adopted daughter. She spent her days caring for her newborn baby, Thisbe.
Heidi encouraged Auden to make friends in a new city and to live her life as a teenager. Auden moved to Tip, a beach area where many youths spent time together. She met a boy named Jake and decided to start a courtship, although she was initially disgusted with the idea. She was not a carefree person, and she preferred to keep it that way.
Heidi took her to the store the next morning, where she met Maggie, Leah, and Esther. Jake used to be Maggie’s boyfriend, and after watching Auden and Jake kiss each other out loud, Maggie had no interest in being her friend. She watched the girls enjoying themselves after work as she waited for them to go out and buy themselves a cup of coffee. After arriving in Colby, she often stayed up late because she could not sleep at night.
She read aloud from under the lampstand, and this is when she noticed Eli. Eli often rode his bicycle at night; they looked at each other from a distance. A few days later, Eli’s bike collided with Auden’s coffee, and he promised to fix it. After the laundry, there was a secret store there where Eli picked her up in the middle of the night. She admired her for her secret place in the community and provided her with fine food. They played Connect Four and discussed all the things Auden had missed in life.
She was a good student, but she was always expected to stay away from what people considered to be his childhood. So by the time she was a smart girl in class, Auden had missed the little things she hoped to find in secret one day. In the end, Eli volunteered to help Auden see what she was missing, and as a result, he also learned to cope with her past mistakes. “Along For The Ride.”
Along For The Ride Ending Explained: What Happened At The End?
Throughout her stay, Auden realized that her father was absent. As her adoptive mother struggled with her baby, her father found ways to escape his responsibilities. As a child, Auden had seen her parents argue, and later they got a divorce. She believed that the summer spent with her father would repair their relationship, but that did not happen.
Her father was a selfish man who used him to run away from his responsibilities. On July 4, Heidi and Robert argued when she wanted her to be taken to a family barracks. Heidi could no longer accept her husband’s absence, and she rebelled. Robert left the house the next morning and was seen by Auden in front of the coffee shop.
Robert accused Heidi of unpredictable behavior, a statement that surprised Auden. He was unsure of being a husband and a father. Auden reminded her of how he always stopped being in his family or rather did not really try to be there for them. She phoned her mother and asked her to come to Colby to talk to Heidi as she was facing a similar situation. Tired of her father’s behavior, Auden became frustrated, and Eli offered to ride her bike.
It woke him up because learning to ride a bike was another experience all the kids had with their dad, but she didn’t. She had a brief conversation with Eli, asking him to think about himself, his future, and what he really wanted to be. She reminded her that it was not his second chance to be a friend and that he should fix her problem instead of running away. At home, her father returned, realizing the mistake he had made. Heidi and Robert had a lively discussion, and they became even more involved with their baby.
The distance between the two men allowed Eli to think about his own life. Although he missed Abe, he missed out on cycling and competitions. Gradually he began to accept how proud Abe would have been if he had succeeded in something they loved to do. Eighteen months later, he finally signed up for the competition and did very well. Auden was there enjoying her. After the event, Auden explained that she had been insulted one night because of the problems she was facing.
She described her feelings for all that they did together every night. The next morning, Auden woke up very early in the morning, something she had not been able to do since the day she first settled in Colby. Eventually, she could sleep well at night knowing that she had managed to confront her father and make him realize his mistake.
Early that morning, Eli came to her house wearing a tuxedo and asked her to wear a dress she had bought but could not wear in his school shop. What Auden thought was a normal day for cycling and drinking coke while wearing their favorite outfits turned into a beach party with her friends. They decorated the place and danced deeply. Auden and Eli kissed each other on the beach, as they had done for the first time. “Along For The Ride.”
In the meantime, we find out that Eli has gone to Barcelona. He was riding his bike and training for a road BMX, as he had always dreamed of. He is still writing letters to Auden, and she appreciates it. Auden and Maggie are now residents of Defries University.
“Along For The Ride” is about discovery and love. Auden learned the value of letting go of an image she created in her classmates. She, too, had to make mistakes and participate in foolish games without judgment. As Heidi had told her, life was too long for us to be just one species.
Auden’s summer at Colby taught her to be different, something she had always hoped for. She found friends, loved ones, and even a home in a place she did not expect. He was lucky that he took the shoulder of faith and did not do what was expected of him. “Along For The Ride”
