Winning Time Season 1 Episode 10, Buss is facing a huge loss as his mother dies, but the Lakers book a place in the NBA Finals. Therefore, the episode highlights the challenges that everyone involved in the Lakers faces in order to reach the finals. Another challenging sacrifice comes at the end of the episode as pool players have to decide whether to let Spencer Haywood finish the season or fire him. After securing their place in the finals, the Lakers team relaxed at The Forum Club.
Winning Time Season 1 Episode 9: Recap
Winning Time Season 1 Episode 9 opens with Claire Rothman explaining to Jerry Buss the team’s finances. The Lakers are hanging on to the music and have to reach the NBA finals to break even despite Buss spending a lot of money on the team. Claire tries to convince Buss to let Jeanie work on the Forum. However, Buss refuses as Jeanie takes care of her grandmother. Buss finds out that doctors have fired McKinney to return as head coach of the Lakers. Therefore, Buss should decide whether to reinstate McKinney or support Paul Westhead and his assistant Pat Riley.
The bus is coming to Jerry West to help him resolve the situation. After some hesitation, West agrees to help Buss make a decision but asks for time. Meanwhile, Riley is worried that he and Westhead will lose their chance to lead the Lakers to the NBA Finals. During practice, Spencer Haywood is noisy, leading to a private conversation with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Haywood admits to being a cocaine addict but promises to be clean before the game. Therefore, Abdul-Jabbar refuses to report his colleagues.
Elsewhere, Buss and Jeanie are worried as Jessie’s condition worsens. The doctor informed Buss that her mother had been alive for several days. After spending time by the lake with his family, Jessie suffers from a stroke that causes her to faint. At that moment, Jeanie is considering talking to Buss about joining the Forum in full.
West informed Buss that he could not resolve the training situation and advised Buss to go with his gut feeling. Buss arrives at McKinney’s house to discuss his return but chooses to resist it after realizing that McKinney is not yet ready to train. The Lakers finally reached the NBA finals when Buss decided to take his mother out of the respirator.
