‘Under the Banner of Heaven is a limited series of real crimes created by Dustin Lance Black. The psychedelic drama follows Detective Jeb Pyre as he watches the two murders of Brenda Lafferty and her young daughter. Serious crimes were committed by my brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, members of a small fundamentalist sect called the School of the Prophets.
As Ron claims that he lived up to his God-given instructions, Pyre begins to question his faith. Exciting experiences include the faith and heartless deeds of the brothers in Lafferty. With the story set in 1980 in Utah, we now, know about Under the Banner of Heaven filming locations.
Where Was Under the Banner of Heaven Series Filmed?
‘Under the Banner of Heaven was captured in Alberta, mainly in Calgary, Carstairs, and a few other places in the Canadian province. This is not the first time a Canadian film has been used to shoot a series of films or films set in the USA.
‘Fargo,’ ‘Our Last,’ and ‘Billy the Kid’ are all good examples of a series set in the USA labeled Alberta. Reports have revealed that the recording of the actual crime-based game took place from mid-August 2021 to the beginning of December 2021.
Alberta
The city of Calgary serves as an important production center for this exhibition. The team mainly shot a few outdoor routes on Stephen Avenue in the downtown area, known for cafes, bars, restaurants, and bars. Aside from what seemed to be strip clubs and dinners in lens photos on Stephen Avenue, one can even see the Palace Theater. The iconic live music venue is at least 100 years old. At the time of the filming, the outer set was dressed to fit the 1980s theme of the story using neon-illuminated symbols and classic-looking cars.

Another prominent recording studio in Calgary is reportedly the McDougall Center, located at 455 6 Street South West. Located on the Alberta Register of Historic Places, the historic building serves as a provincial government center in southern Alberta. In addition, the production team may have used certain provincial parks and protected natural areas to cover a small portion of the Under the Banner of Heaven series.
Since the church is the central part of the narrative, it seems that important parts of the play were recorded in St. Peter’s Anglican Church at 903 75 Avenue South West. In addition, several consecutive missions may have been shot down in the town of Crossfield, part of the Calgary Metropolitan Region. According to sources, there have been discussions about an empty bank building in the city used to record a few scenes.

Another prominent recording area is the town of Carstairs, about 20 miles [30 km] north of Calgary. During the recording, the actors and staff were received with great warmth and enthusiasm by the local people. Some of the scenes were shot in the city on McCrimmon Drive and in the surrounding area. Apparently, the group is building a foundation behind a retirement home called Chinook Winds Seniors Lodge.

Although staff members tried to minimize any possible disruptions, other traffic interruptions on McCrimmon Drive and in the vicinity of Macintosh Drive were unavoidable. In fact, the driving sequence was lensed on Gough Road between 10th Avenue and Macintosh Drive. The film crew seems to be using the area near the Carstairs Curling Club.

Located about 68 miles from Calgary, the city of Drumheller is on display. The editor’s team did an excellent job of capturing the worst scenes as the dry and scary environment creates an amazing atmosphere on screen. It was reported that the city of Strathmore also sponsored the production of this reality crime show. Some of you may see Mainstreet in the city of Didsbury in a few shots. “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
