However, it all ends in tears, as these arrangements usually do, to borrow Gambon’s character line from the film. Now, know about the Layer Cakemovie.
Layer Cake: Movie Synopsis
To stay true to its name, the film unfolds like a multi-layered cake, with cream and a lot of dough. But, as the saying goes, one cannot have a cake and eat it. Our unnamed character (called XXXX) owns a small drug business going to Ireland, along with his longtime colleagues Morty, Terry, and Clarkie. The world has gone to the wolves, but the business is doing very well. XXXX takes orders from an old chap named Jimmy Price with the faithful Gene under him.
Gene is trusted by the protagonist group, as he seems to be respected by Jimmy. XXXX is a middle-aged business – buying drugs from consumers and selling them to high-end clients. He spends dirty money using an irrational accountant called Mr. Singh. Everything went well until he got a call from Jimmy. Jimmy has two jobs of his own. First, a young man named Duke looks forward to transporting large quantities of drugs. That should not be a problem for the character in the line of duty.
The other work, however, is outside of his professional field. Charlie, the daughter of Eddie Temple, is missing, and the main character has been given the task of finding her. XXXX goes to the dock to negotiate with Duke about the transfer of one million MDMA tabs. The hot-headed Duke is not yet ready to lower the price, and the main character withdraws, promising to keep Duke posted. XXXX meets cunning Cody and Tiptoes at the club and gives them the benefit of finding Charlie.
He meets Duke’s nephew Sidney at the same club, while Sidney’s girlfriend Tammy passes him by. At the time, XXXX was considering selling drugs to a Liverpool gang led by Trevor and Shanks but discovered that Duke had stolen drugs from the brutal Serbian criminal gang. Duke mentioned the XXXX name everywhere in Amsterdam, and it is still mandatory. The Serbs sent a killer named Dragon in his own way, but that was not the only problem.
Eddie Temple discovers that XXXX is looking for his daughter, kidnaps him, and reveals that Jimmy is a police detective who falls twice into the gang. Jimmy has made a disastrous investment in other countries, and now that all his money is gone, he wants to kidnap Charlie and use him as a chip. XXXX kills Jimmy to fix points but returns to Mr’s office. Singh also got all his money gone. At the time, Duke was missing with his loudmouth girlfriend, and the XXXX team kept a tab on their performance.
Under pressure, XXXX arranges a meeting with Dragan and takes on striker Mr. Lucky to kill him, but Mr. Lucky ends up dead instead. Dragan isn’t someone to be bothered with, but he hasn’t killed Duke yet. At the moment of the altercation between Gene and Morty, XXXX discovers that one of Gene’s co-conspirators has killed Duke, whose body is still stored in the refrigerator.
Last time, XXXX went into the yard to interview a member of the Duke Gazza gang, but the scene was attacked by police, and the criminals managed to escape an inch. But we are amazed! The police raid was organized by XXXX himself. Dragan is satisfied with the package provided by XXXX, while the drugs return to the boys, who take them to Eddie Temple. But Eddie, it turns out, is a bad guy.
Layer Cake Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
As a fitting end to the unrelenting violence that covers most of the film, the ending is set aside. Eddie takes drugs from the boys while Eddie’s supporters keep pointing guns at them. But XXXX is smart enough to expect this double act and has already hired Trevor and Skanks to follow Eddie Temple’s men. In an armed robbery, a Liverpool gang killed Eddie’s right-hand man Mr. Troop, seized drugs, and paid off debts.
In another scene, we see the magnitude of the performance of the Serbs, where ecstasy tabs were created in the Fordist production line. We get the feeling that a million tabs, making the story go on, are just a day’s work for these Serbs, which exposes the ban on the lives being killed in the system. On the other hand, XXXX longs to escape the drug business, and at the last minute, gives his colleagues – Morty, Gene, Clarkie, and Terry – the responsibility of running a business and taking a break.
The sheer number of lives lost during the story made XXXX realize the importance of life, and he is looking forward to living his life away from the blood-soaked drug business. He also meets his new girlfriend, Tammy, outside the club. But his pay is due, and in the final scene, a flexible but apologetic Sidney kills him. The suggestion is that selfishness breeds hatred and hatred breeds violence, and in the horizontal cake section, the extra cherry is stripped first. So, XXXX follows the same uncertain conclusion that Crazy Larry and Jimmy Price faced before him.
In the last moments, Dragan is given a package by the main character. Dragan initially hoped to return both drugs and Duke to his superiors but left the contents of the package. XXXX cleverly deceives Dragan by attacking the police with the help of his loyal villains Cody and Tiptoes, but neither Gazza nor Dragan has any knowledge of this. False attacks help XXXX get drugs without paying a penny for Duke’s criminals, while he is able to convince Dragan that the police have taken drugs.
Dragan returns without drugs, while XXXX plans to sell them at Eddie Temple. We know how that happened. But what in the box XXXX gives Dragan, someone might ask. It’s anyone’s guess, and at the last minute, the Serbian boss opens the box door to find Duke’s beheaded head. In the previous episode, we saw Duke being shot by one of Gene’s men, and bringing the head, we collect, is one of the easiest tasks XXXX has been given during the narrative.
