‘Gentleman Jack’ is a historical drama series based on Anne Lister’s personal diary, containing millions of highly coded words. Developed by Sally Wainwright, narratives about Lister’s relationships with women and a few other personal aspects of her life. Arranged in the 1830s, it follows Anne Lister as she heads to Halifax, West Yorkshire, to reclaim her legacy.
Owning a property is not the only new thing Anne experiences as she hears sparks fly when she meets Ann Walker. This eventually blossoms into dangerous love. Writes diary entries in coded language so no one can look at them. The history of the early 19th century, accompanied by an amazing narrative, brings viewers back in time and leaves them curious about places from the Gentleman Jack series.
Where Was Gentleman Jack Series Filmed?
The ‘Gentleman Jack’ is widely documented locally, in and around the historical district of Yorkshire, England, and a few other places in Europe, especially Denmark and Germany. To make the drama series seem more realistic, the production team, for the most part, uses real-world scenes where the narrative is set. The main photography of the first season started in May 2018 and wrapped up in November 2018.
As for the sophomore season, the recording was banned several times due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Therefore, production of the second round began in October 2020 and ended in October 2021.
England
To record several important sequences, a production team camped in the northeastern part of England. Inside photos of Vere Cameron’s home have been filmed in Fairfax House, Castlegate. As for the incident where Anne and Ann had dinner together, it is visualized at Holy Trinity Church in Goodramgate.

Actors and members of the ‘Gentleman Jack’ team were also seen filming a few scenes in York Minster and surrounding areas in November 2018. Specifically, the Precentor Court located near York Minster serves as the background for the final scenes of the first season.
In addition, the National Trust – Treasurer’s House in Minster Yard is seen as a dormitory in a certain order. In addition, Duncombe Place in downtown York City and Grays Court, located on Chapter House Street, serves as important exhibition venues.
For recording purposes, a team of drama producers traversed North Yorkshire. Several halls and venues serve as outstanding production facilities, including Langton Hall in Malton. In addition, Newby Hall, located in the Skelton-on-Ure district, doubles as King and Lady Stuart, while Broughton Hall Estate in Skipton represents the Black Swan Inn.

The sequence involving Ann Walker’s home is recorded in Sutton Park, Main Street in Sutton-on-the-Forest. At the same time, Rievaulx Abbey in Rievaulx was used to record a significant episode for the second season.
The production team of the history series spends most of its time filming in West Yorkshire as many famous production sites are located in this part of the English capital. As the exhibition is organized in Halifax, especially at Anne Lister’s home in Shibden Hall, many sequences are shot in and around Halifax, with a few scenes recorded in the actual Shibden Hall itself. The historic hall is located on Lister’s Road.

At the start of the Gentleman Jack first season, Suranne Jones (Anne Lister) did not hide her excitement about filming the series. He said, “It still haunts me when I take a picture of Shibden… As I follow in the footsteps of Anne Lister, I enter her house, go up the stairs, eat at her restaurant, have parties when she makes business deals, explore the same place and walk.” Since most of the rooms in this area are not large enough to record, some scenes are also recorded with sets for the purpose.
There are various other locations in Halifax from all over the series. The Wainhouse Tower – located at 9 Wakefield Gate – is the site from the opening sequence of the Gentleman Jack first season. In addition, Shibden Park, Bare Head Tunnel, Rawson Street, Green Lane, Paddock Lane, and Halifax Town Center, are all used as backgrounds to record a few outdoor scenes of the Gentleman Jack drama.

Leeds Park Square, Salts Mill located on Victoria Road, and Little Germany located in Bradford serve as recording venues for various street scenes. Several outdoor shots were fitted with lenses at various locations throughout the region, including Nutter Lane in Birstall, the Lawrence Batley Theater on Queen Street, and Temple Newsam. A series involving Rawsons Bank and a 19th-century market is being filmed in the town of Huddersfield. On the other hand, Bramham Park in Wetherby doubles as outside of the Skelfer House.
In addition, many exterior paintings at the Lord Nelson Inn in Luddenden appear as Stags Head Inn. In contrast, Fleece Inn, located in Westgate in Elland, is used to shoot the inside line of the Stags Head Inn. Scenes set up in the attorney general’s office are being filmed at Oakwell Hall and Oakwell County Park, located on Nova Lane in Birstall.

The wedding scene for season 1 was filmed in St. Louis. Peter’s Church in Sowerby Bridge. Haugh End Lane – also located on the Sowerby Bridge – operates as a set of Holts Pit, a colliery owned by the Listers.
Gentleman Jack Season 1, Thomas Snowden proposes Suzannah Washington to Southolm Farm. This was recorded on the Harewood Estate in Leeds. In addition, the town of Ripponden is used to record scenes set up in Scotland, especially near Coal Gate. In addition, an important sequence was recorded at Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham, southwest of West Yorkshire. “Gentleman Jack.”
Denmark

Actors and crew even went to Denmark for recording purposes. A few of the sites that serve as production sites for the series are Copenhagen City Hall in Rådhuspladsen 1 and Gavnø Castle, located on a small island in the Næstved municipality. Some of you may see the castles refusing in a few squares.
Germany
A few series were also shot in Germany. The scene where Anne expressed her frustration with the 25-foot water cascade was shot at the Hercules Monument in downtown Kassel.
