‘The Bombardment’is a Dutch drama movie set in May 1940, in the city of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. It revolves around Vincent de Graaf – an assistant baker and amateur boxer – who falls in love with Eva von Heerle, the wealthy daughter of German refugees. However, Eva has promised a middle-aged man, Dirk Lagerwaard, to protect the safety of his family. Vincent, on the other hand, wishes to move to the United States to care for his ailing brother.
Life, however, darkened when German troops invaded the Netherlands. Both Vincent and Eva try to navigate their lives and emotions as they roam the war-torn world around them. ‘The Bombardment’ was filmed extensively in and around the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands to fully capture the context of the story.
In addition, shots were fired in the cities of Utrecht, the Netherlands, and Budapest, Hungary. The filming of The Bombardment movie is said to have started in May 2012 and was completed a few months later.
Netherlands
Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands, with a history dating back to 1270. The town was established near the dam on the river Rotte, which is how it was named. Located in the province of South Holland, the city was heavily attacked on May 14, 1940, during World War II. The bombing of the air was aimed at helping German troops fight in the city and disperse against the Dutch. The attack, also known as the Rotterdam Blitz, serves as the plot of the movie.

Rotterdam is home to the largest port in Europe. It also serves as a waterway to Western Europe because of its extensive rail, water, and road distribution system, thus earning the title “Gateway to Europe.” Today, Rotterdam stands as a symbol of Dutch prosperity despite the scars left by its enemies. Part of ‘The Bombardment’ was also recorded in the city of Utrecht, which is one of the most neglected tourist attractions in the world. Called the “urban excitement and splendor of the small town,” it serves as the world’s religious center and home to a few medieval monuments. It is also known for its wooded canals and is home to a prestigious university with the same name.

Utrecht was considered the most important city in the whole of the Netherlands before the emergence of Amsterdam. According to historical records, after the Rotterdam bombing, German forces threatened to do the same in Utrecht if the Dutch did not surrender. Given the harshness of the Blitz and the importance of Utrecht, the Dutch surrendered to the Germans and signed capitulation the morning after the attack.
Dordrecht, also known as Dordt, is the oldest city in Holland. The city is located in South Holland, like Rotterdam, and is famous for its rich history and culture. It faced its own problems at the end of World War 2. A few scenes from the 2012 movie were shot in the city.

According to the report, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen or Zeelandic Flanders also served as a ‘Bombardment’ shooting range. This region is not connected to the rest of the Netherlands but shares a border with Belgium. Therefore, it is connected throughout its country through tunnels and railways.
Hungary
In addition to recording in the Netherlands, the band also moved to Hungary to record a few sequences. A few episodes of ‘The Bombardment’ were shot in Budapest between June and July 2012. Located near the Danube River, Hungary is one of the largest cities in the European Union.
