Based on the 2018 Karin Slaughter novel, the Netflix series slowly brings together the amazing past of mother and daughter on a church trip. The show is coming hard and fast towards the end, making the climax of the season even more explosive. Now, know about Pieces of Her.
Pieces of Her Season 1: Synopsis
The program opens with Andy and Laura at lunchtime, when a gunman enters and kills two women in a landless manner. Andy, a healthy employee of the local police department, was shocked by the event and was even more surprised when her mother, Laura, cleverly cut her throat. Shortly thereafter, Laura starts acting strangely and begs Andy not to come home. After the robber attacks the mother at night, the confused daughter finally leaves.
Andy follows her mother’s instructions and finds a suitcase full of money. With growing suspicion, she looks at an old family friend named Charlie Bass but realizes he is also lying to him. Followed by mysterious men, she finally begins to reveal that her mother is related to the wealthy Queller family.
Recognizing her real mother’s name as Jane, Andy traces Jasper, who is portrayed as Jane’s brother. Unfortunately, Jasper, the vice president, also appears to have bad motives and is trying to steal Andy’s suitcase.
Meanwhile, in retrospect, it was revealed that Laura (like Jane) and her daughter had entered the witness protection program years ago and that Charlie was their host. As a young woman, Jane became part of a powerful group known as the Army of the Changing World when they fell in love with its leader, Nick Harp. The latter believed to be the pharmaceutical company of Jane ‘
As the truth began to emerge from Andy, she was finally reunited with Laura. The mother and daughter have a heart-to-heart talk, and the first reveals that Andy’s father was, in fact, Nick Harp, a refugee for the past three decades. Nick is wanted for the murder of Martin Queller, and as the season draws to a close, a wanted criminal and Jane’s ex-boyfriend appear.
Pieces of Her Season 1: Ending,
Alone in a forest house, Nick finally meets Jane (now Laura) and their daughter Andy. He picks up a suitcase full of money, but Andy creates a game, which allows him and Laura to face Nick. During the ensuing confrontation, the authorities arrived, and Nick was finally arrested after fleeing for 30 years.
As things begin to return to normal, Andy can’t even begin to imagine what happened on a tragic day her grandfather, Martin Queller, was shot. She goes on to dig and finds that Nick’s case is based solely on her mother’s testimony.
Sensing that Nick might be innocent and perhaps being adopted by her mother, Andy runs to look for Laura. Seeing the latter standing on the beach, and not revealing the truth, the daughter gently asks her mother if she would like to have a blast on the beach.
So, some last-minute twists and revelations turn the story in his head and firmly state that Nick, who is the protagonist of the narrative, is probably innocent of his murder. The last episode reveals that the fugitive was not the one who gave Grace Juno the murder weapon – the woman who shot Martin. Instead, it is shockingly revealed with a flashback in the closing moments of the conclusion that Jane gave Grace a gun by changing their bags.
So, while the reality remains that it was Grace who pulled out a deadly gun (before turning her shotgun on herself and committing suicide), the man who plotted to kill Martin Queller was, in fact, his youngest daughter. During the 1988 Oslo International Economic Forum, Jane met Grace just before the latter had a panel session with Martin.
Saying that her father is in control of everything, Jane reveals that she is pregnant and that Martin has tried to force her baby out. As it turned out, killing her was the only way Jane said she could guarantee the safety of her unborn child. The child in question, as you can imagine, is Andy.
Grace, who lost her husband and three children in a tragic accident she believes was caused by the drug Quellcorp, easily convinced Jane and accepted the gun, and then used it to kill. Nick, who is accused of supplying firearms, is unaware of the existence of a gun until he sees Grace using it. His plan is always to blow up the ink bomb on stage to humiliate Martin, and the fugitive, apparently never planned to assassinate the head of a wealthy chemical company.
Nick Harp was arrested in the last episode while he and Laura were in the woods. Authorities surround the two, and the fugitive, who has been on the run for 30 years (since Martin Queller’s assassination), has been sentenced. Of course, as we find out later, Nick is not guilty of murdering Martin (even though he killed a captive professor).
However, as Laura (and later Andy) seems to be the only ones who don’t know the truth, it seems Nick will fall for Martin’s murder. Therefore, Nick is likely to face a more severe legal sentence for his alleged crimes. Although his sentence was not disclosed, an undisclosed government official revealed that he would be sent to a higher institution, which could lead to a life sentence.
The suitcase, full of money and acquired by Andy at the behest of his mother, remains a place of conspiracy. The source of the money raises all the questions until it turns out that this money is actually the payment of the professor who was abducted by Nick all those years ago. When Nick hides after Martin’s murder, Jane keeps a suitcase for herself, realizing that she and her unborn daughter might need money one day as she waits for Nick to follow her and deal with her (which is exactly what happened).
However, it is not money, but something else that is completely hidden in the suitcase and very important. When Nick finally catches it, he grabs the money and quickly finds a small tape hidden in the suitcase lines. The tape contains a voice recording that proves that Jasper Queller, Martin’s successor, collaborated with Nick in a planned attack (ink bomb) on his father.
With Jasper vying for the post of Deputy President, this tape is the key to making them one of the most powerful men in the country. This also explains why Jasper tried to steal Andy’s suitcase but ended up failing.
In the end, it seems the tape has been destroyed as Jasper seems to have a tight grip on the situation in the end and does not seem to be afraid of being deceived. Of course, if the story goes on, we may find that either Laura or Andy actually picked up the tape at the last minute, which would again turn the tables on the mother and daughter’s favor. However, it seems unlikely that they will use it to criticize Jasper.
