Ontario
The city of Peterborough in central Ontario is the primary shooting location for “The Novice”. According to director Lauren, the city is strange and bizarre, dating back to the 1960s. However, she was fascinated by the breathtaking water and fog like the cinematic atmosphere she wanted to portray through her movie.
Peterborough is a wonderful city located on the banks of the Kavarta Lakes. The area around Little Lake on the Otonabi River and the 386 km long Trent-Severn Waterway provide the perfect setting for rowing scenes in the movie. In fact, popular films such as the action-packed ‘Jumper’ and the ‘Horror’ movie ‘Urban Legend’ were also used for filming. Much of the movie was shot at Trent University, 1600 West Bank Drive, Peterborough.
The fact that the university is located on the banks of the Otonabi River makes this sports-themed movie ideal for filming. It fits in perfectly with the important theme of the movie with its academic layout and latest outdoor as well as indoor rowing facilities. For the purpose of filming, production crews flocked to the university campus and surrounding areas, capturing its natural beauty in every possible way.
An attractive place to shoot was a vacant apartment in the city, which was used to paint the interior of the Alex University dormitory. The Peterborough Rowing Club on 3599 Nassau Mills Road, near Trent University, was used as a filming unit to movie many important and thrilling scenes. This rowing club was used to shoot many rowing scenes in the movie and provided the most lovely background for the movie narrative.
“The Novice.” Interestingly, the movie’s lead actress Isabelle revealed in an interview with Vogue that she did not use body doubles for rowing scenes. “She (Lauren) pulled out her old erg machine from the back of her garage at her home in Glendale and showed me how to use it properly,” the actor revealed.
“I have six weeks to get ready, yet, at 4:30 in the morning, I put on the clothes I had set the night before and got out of bed and went to Marina del Rey crying and cried for three hours, take a break. Get 15 minutes to sleep and eat, and then I I’ll be on the water for another three hours. “
Isabel Fuhrmann continued, “I drive into congested traffic on the other side of the LA and lift weights with a trainer to get the amount of muscle I need to look like a rover.” The movie crew carefully selected all the locations to fit the story to ensure a smooth and flawless narrative of The Novice movie.
