‘Asakusa Kid’ was shot entirely in and around Japan, especially in Tokyo. Much of the story takes place in Tokyo, with Asakusa Fran-ja being the center of Takeshi’s coming age. The director took his cast and crew to various locations in and around the city to finalize the story.

Asakusa Kid movie was shot in and around Tokyo, the bustling capital of Japan. Known for its round-the-clock nightlife, Tokyo features a mix of traditional and ultra-modern architecture. Most of the scenes were filmed in several special wards of the city. Some of the scenes were filmed at F Organics, a 19-year-old cosmetics store in downtown Shibuya, near the Daiken-Yama station.
The staff also visited Chuo City, another special ward in the city center. MDM Tokyo, a wholesale store located at 7-5 Nihonbashiokoyamacho in Ch City, offered its premises to shoot some scenes. Perhaps, to continue the feeling of that period, the director filmed theatrical scenes in Asakusa Franca-Jalo, the cabaret club in downtown Tokyo where the movie is named.
Gekiden Hitori directed the movie from his own screenplay, based on the autobiographical memoir of the same name by acclaimed comedian and filmmaker Takeshi Kitano in 1988. The title of the movie comes from “Asakusa Francais Ja”, a cabaret theater character who struggled to start working as a comedian after Takeshi left college. The movie celebrates his extraordinary mentor, Senjaburo Fukami, who gave Takeshi his famous line, “I’m a comedian, you idiot!”
Kinato began his illustrious career as a writer, filmmaker, and comedian with his own passion. He co-starred with fellow comedian Kiyoshi Kaneko in the comedy duet “The Two Beats”, earning his name “Beat Takeshi”. The story of the biopic follows the story of his age as Kitano reaches the center of the spotlight. Elements of Takeshi’s early life as a comedian are wonderfully captured in the movie.
