Almost all of “Anne Boleyn” was filmed in and around Yorkshire. When revisiting history, the director wanted to be as authentic as possible. So, they moved to the historic Bolton Castle in Wensleydale, a favorite of series co-star Mark Stanley. The site helped artists to understand how desolate royal life was during the reign of Queen Anne.
It was cold, and they understood why there were curtains on the wall – to prevent it from absorbing all the heat inside the stone. History tells us that the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth I, the Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in a tower in a castle in the 1560s. Mary also filmed some scenes in the Queen of Scots Sail.
Some outdoor scenes, including a kissing scene between Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour, were filmed on the majestic Castle Howard grounds. The famous castle is a stately home in the civic parish of Henderskelfe in North Yorkshire. Private residence and property have been featured in numerous television and film productions, including ‘Bridgeton’ and ‘Death Come to Pemberley’.
Another location featured in the Herwood House Series in Herwood. Thanks to shows like ‘Donton Abbey’, this place is nothing new to filmmaking. The interior of the estate is ideal for production due to its bright and spacious rooms, while the exterior has a landscaped garden.
Most of the Anne Boleyn scenes were filmed at St. Michael’s Church, a 15th-century Gothic church in the village of Amali, and at Oakwell Hall, an Elizabethan Manor Grade I listing in Bristol, West Yorkshire.
Additional filming took place at Markenfield Hall, a 14th-century moat manor, 3 miles south of Ripon. A country house in the iconic Studley Royal Park near Fountain Hall, Ripon, is also featured in some of the scenes.
