The Green Mile is a 1999 drama movie based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. Directed by renowned director Frank Darabont, it tells the story of prison guard Paul, who was posted to the 1935 Cold Mountain Penitentiary AKA Green Mile.
When John Coffee, a prisoner on death row, arrived he saw miraculous events in his facility. The moods and emotions of the Death Row Guards and prisoners are wonderfully portrayed in the movie. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Sam Rockwell.
This is director Stephen King’s third adaptation of “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Mist”. Set in the western state of Louisiana, this award-winning movie comprehensively illustrates the prison setup of a small town in the 30s. The horrific events of the prison service as the right backdrop for exposing the agony of death, the injustice of the justice system in history, as well as the mysterious feeling that surrounds John and his supernatural healing abilities. The Green Mile Movie Filming Locations
The Green Mile movie is mostly shot in California and Tennessee, North Carolina. To add mystical and mysterious elements and give a glimpse into the history of such prisons, the set is designed with tall cathedral windows.
The production team also genuinely mirrored the electric chairs. Filming began in July 1998 and ended in December 1998. Production designer Terence Marsh worked extensively on set details.
Tennessee
The entire prison scene was filmed at the Tennessee State Penitentiary on Cockerill Bend Boulevard in West Nashville. It has been closed since 1992 and no one is allowed inside considering the condition of the building. The dilapidated former prison served as a viable alternative to the Louisiana peninsula, where the story was first set.
Another shoot location around Nashville is the Old Train Bridge over the Kenny Fork River, where John searches for the bodies of two children. Thirty miles from Nashville is the College Grove Methodist Church, which also serves as the location for The Green Mile.
It was here that Paul attended Elaine’s funeral at the end of the movie. Finally, the cemetery shown in the picture is the Round Hill Cemetery, located on Round Hill Road, about 60 miles south of Nashville.

Carolina
“The Green Mile.” Georgia Pines is the name of a nursing home in which an elderly Paul tells his moving story. This nursing home is located on Blue Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock. Built and filmed at Flat Top Manor in Coen Memorial Park.
Originally built for textile businessman Moses Cohen, the spacious Colonial Revival-style building was built in 1901 and has about 20 rooms. It currently serves as a craft center for regional artists to showcase their work.
The Sunset Bronze Studios at 5800 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles and the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank in the San Fernando Valley served as locations for some scenes from ‘The Green Mile.
The Old Warner Bros. studio was used to shoot films such as Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ (2020). 7200 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood. The production team also filmed some scenes at Samuel Goldwin’s studio.
