The Nightingale movie is based in Tasmania and was filmed almost entirely on an Australian island. The town of Oatlands, located just north of the provincial capital Hobart, was used by the movie’s crew to shoot several scenes. This includes renting the exterior of a house on 92 High Street in a historic city.
The area around the rural area called Gretna also seems to be used to record many forest and open country scenes.
Mount Field National Park, located northwest of Hobart at 66 Lake Dobson Road, was also used to record many outdoor scenes. The national park is home to a variety of landscapes and vegetation ranging from tropical rain forests to alpine. Most notably, the area around Mount Field West, located in the western part of the park, was heavily used by production workers.
The surrounding area of Derwent Valley, in southern Tasmania, is known for its scenic countryside and rolling hills. The recording was apparently done in many places in the region. A few nearby historic buildings were probably used as backgrounds.
“The Nightingale.” The Derwent Valley region, originally inhabited by Aborigines, was also the site of early colonial settlements and therefore has a special significance in this movie, set in the middle of a war between the colonies and the Aboriginal tribes.
