Dopesick Season 1 Episode 5: Recap
In Dopesick Season 1 Episode 5, Dopesick begins with a woman named Marianne Skolick who has worked hard over the years trying to get someone – anyone – to look at Purdue Pharma. After the death of her daughter at the hands of Oxy, she is determined to try to find her justice. Happily, you get that through Rick Mountcastle, who cries and asks to speak.
Meanwhile, Finnix continues to indulge in addiction. In fact, it reaches up to 400mg per day. It is shocking and his negligence of the dose tells itself. If that wasn’t enough to show how addictive the drug is, Betsy sells her mother’s jewelry to support her addiction.
Unfortunately, this Oxy epidemic is about to get worse. Richard Sackler intends to introduce a new 160mg pill. He also wants to establish himself as Purdue’s president in the program. This will bring billions of profits – but only if they vote for him.
Now, as Purdue pursues reps to accidentally sell OxyContin high to the public, Rick and Randy begin to filter out all notes posted from vendors about their concerns. There are many (not to mention hundreds) call notes from spokespersons who reported incidents of drug abuse through crushing pills and coughing.
Now, apparently, all the retailers knew that the drug was more addictive than other opioids but that FDA label was enough to convince them otherwise. One of the executives even signed an NDA with his resignation package, which seems to be a common occurrence when no one wants to talk to the two.
Back in 1999, Udell’s secretary, Maureen Sara, was tasked with investigating Oxy through the forums. What he finds is shocking. A lot of people cheat the system, the level of addiction passes through the roof and there are even tips on how to get to the top. Sara immediately sends an email expressing her concerns, in CCing to all the managers in the email she sends about her findings.
Eventually, the message comes out and as OxyContin becomes very addictive, the government jumps in and decides to test this for itself. It turned out, however, that the detective mentioned above was Marianne Skolnick, a woman from the first episode of the series. This gives more context to what is going on and it turns out that they were collecting Purdue sales again to expose their fraudulent marketing schemes. And that dealer? Howard Udell’s secretary, Sara.
Elsewhere, Finnix is preparing for surgery but apparently still feels the effects of Oxy. He resolved the whole procedure and as the blood flowed from the wound, he called an ambulance. When the man was taken to the hospital, Finnix made a joke and even asked for Oxy from one of the doctors, who definitely saw him in custody.
In the end, it all depends on the witness statement and we know from the start of the season that Finnix will be one of those people. Who will join him? We will have to wait and see. Dopesick Season 1 Episode 6.
