‘Dopesick’ in Hulu enters the people and processes behind the American opioid epidemic. Based on the 2018 non-fiction book ‘Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America’ by Beth Macy, the series explores in detail how corporate profits repeatedly undermine public safety and the negative effects they once had, especially in marginalized economies.
The background comes from everyday America – where we show ordinary people and families whose lives have been ruined as a result of addiction.

The Dopesick series is mostly based in Virginia, where it is also being recorded. Aside from the economic incentives and the many impressive venues provided by the Commonwealth, Macy has also been seen pushing to record in Virginia to keep things real.
The product has been used in many areas in many cities, and the main photography took place from December 2020 until May 24, 2021.
“Dopesick.” The production was based in the provincial capital of Richmond, where a 250,000-square-foot warehouse is set up and used to record many interiors. Other areas around the city that were used include the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts at 200 North Arthur Ashe Boulevard in the Museum District. The museum seemed to be used to record scenes depicting the beautiful home of the Sackler family.
The Boulevard Burger and Brew, found at 1300 N. Arthur Ashe Boulevard, were also used to record various scenes in the series. In addition, various venues including Canal Walk, The Fan District, Bookbinder’s Restaurant, and Manchester Bridge have also been used to make the show come alive.
Other Places in Virginia
Many towns around the Commonwealth of Virginia are also used in production, and the recording takes place in the towns of Hopewell and Bowling Green. Lexington, the seat of the Rockbridge County region, was also used to install the lens.
“Dopesick.” Since the series is set up with a mix of urban and suburban areas, a group of producers has traveled to various cities and towns to film in front of various domains. Apart from the Richmond warehouse, many recordings were made locally. Most local churches and residences in various Virginia cities in the area seem to be used to keep the game alive.
Producers also spent time in the Roanoke district in Western Virginia, where the town of Clifton Forge in Alleghany County was used to shoot several scenes. The recording was done in several buildings around the city, and a few residents were registered as additional. In addition, the city of Covington was used for recording, as was the case with the Shenandoah Valley.
Many other sites include The Estate at River Run, located at 2421 River Road West, Maidens, which was used to record scenes involving Richard Sackler’s mansion. A few areas around downtown Petersburg may also be used to shoot a few service scenes.
