Netflix Avatar Broadcast News: Avatar: The Last Airbender should alleviate anxious fans. The prospects for the project were dashed when first-time founders Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko abandoned live adaptation; many fear that the departure of DiMartino and Konietzko has shown that this new version will not be trusted in the popular TV series. Happily, live Avatar: The Last Airbender shows that Netflix will be honoring its source content.
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender
Avatar: The Last Airbender Fans: TLA has reason to be concerned, after being fired by Ml. The movie was not only a box office disappointment, but it was also controversial because it featured white characters in roles played for people of color. In addition, some view the animation as the perfect show and believe that it should not be touched at all, as changes are inevitable in any transformation. Without real creators being there to keep the product on track, the fear of the end result will be an unknown and a negative representation of a story that holds the importance of many.
The main characters of Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender: TLA suggests that the series will follow the first show. Avatar characters seem to respect the characters’ age, race, and general archetypes. This means that the current Netflix team actually pays attention to the details of the series (and, perhaps, learns from Shyamalan’s mistakes); even though DiMartino, Konietzko, and original lead author Aaron Ehasz (busy with Netflix highly acclaimed by The Dragon Prince) will be absent, the cast list is an interesting indication that Netflix respects source sources.
Finding the main characters directly in the live-action Avatar: Adapting to the TLA is very important because they are the first basic indicator of how good the whole system will be. Those core actors (Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko) must be properly represented in order to win over the fans.
The younger cast not only imitates Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender looks amazingly like their cartoon counterparts, their age and nationality are exactly the same – dispelling rumors that the children’s actors will be too old. As an added bonus, Netflix actors are knowledgeable about the industry. Gordon Cormier (Aang) has been on other Netflix shows such as Lost in Space and Two Sentence Horror Stories. Kiawentiio Tarbell (Katara) played the lead role in the film Beans. Ian Ousley (Sokka) had many roles, including memorable episodes in 13 Reasons Why and Young Sheldon. Finally, Dallas Liu (Zuko) appears in the upcoming Shang-Chi along with The Legend of the Ten Rings.
DiMartino and Konietzko’s absence from the project is a red flag, especially after Shyamalan’s Last Airbender movie had a lot of problems – especially reports that the director was rudely refusing to listen to both creators. However, Netflix’s flexibility remains promising.
The project has already avoided a fatal mistake in Shyamalan’s translation, and the statement that new lead author Albert Kim released [via Twitter] on the same day as the cast announcement is also encouraging, suggesting that he understands and is committed to the original story. But that is the only time we will tell you about the success of the Netflix show. At least thanks to Avatar: Broadcast news for The Last Airbender, fans have a reason not to stop getting used to Netflix for now.
