CODA Movie Filming Locations
‘CODA’ was shot almost entirely in the coastal city of Massachusetts, where the recording department was carefully looking for real-world locations that would serve as home and surroundings for the movie’s middle family. The recording includes scenes captured inside a fishing boat, where actors and crew spend most of their time practicing the seemingly trustworthy process on the screen.
The beautiful movie was shot in late summer 2019, but after production, it was interrupted by the COVID-19 epidemic, and some of it had to be made far away. Let’s take a closer look at some of the recording locations used in this movie.
Rockport, Massachusetts
The coastal town of Rockport in Essex County was also used to record ‘CODA’. ‘The production team has especially used the Steel Derrick quarry in Rockport to record several scenes. Scenes of the floodwaters in the movie were shot at the quarry, a modern-day quarry that is now used by local people.
Gloucester, Massachusetts
The movie was shot mainly in the Gloucester area of Essex County, Massachusetts, an important fishing destination. The movie director grew up in nearby Cambridge and spent most of his childhood in Gloucester, where he became acquainted with the fishing community and the challenges they faced. This is part of why Heder decided to set up a middle-class family for his movie in the city.
Many residential houses in Gloucester have been used for local recording, including one that doubles as a family home. Besides, the Victorian-style house used to depict the home of a music director is the one Heder visited as a child. Various indoor and outdoor scenes were recorded in these houses.
A boat used to record a fishing boat called the Angela & Rose, owned by Captain Paul Vitale. The director and actors were instructed in local fishing practices by an experienced Captain. Interestingly, at the time of recording, the actors were doing a lot of work on the boat.
