In view of the show’s preparation, it is natural for anyone to wonder if a prison-based women’s program is being shot at a correctional facility in real life. Let us tell you how the builders actually took the modern approach and went on to build a purpose-built building in Melbourne, Australia. During the seasons, there have been major changes in one area.
Melbourne, Australia Location
Shooting seasons 1 to 3 took place at an old warehouse in Clayton, located east of Melbourne, Victoria. The altered building was transformed into a dreadful landscape with gray walls, narrow hallways, and lanterns. Prior to working as a Wentworth Detention Center, it was owned by a pharmaceutical company. The actual location is 1408 Center Rd, Clayton South, Victoria, Australia.
However, in July 2014, the owner of the warehouse announced that the property had been sold and would be demolished to make way for new housing. Following the news, the production team had to find a new recording facility. In order not to interrupt the narrative flow, the writing team began work and revised the season 3 script to introduce the arc of fire at the end of the third season. At the end of season 3, a fire engulfed part of the prison, forcing inmates and prison staff to move to a new unit.
From season four onwards, the recording took place on a set built in Newport, Victoria, located directly at 80 Champion Road. The new one was decorated with removable walls, doors, and other replacements. It has doubled the areas where the main action took place, namely, laundry room, prison cells, bathroom, and gym in the new wing of the facility.
On Sep 4, 2020, the show’s producer Pino Amenta shared a few photos after completing the shoot that ended in the ‘Wentworth’ series. Next to photographs of actors and actors, Pino wrote, “The last day of the shooting in Wentworth. What a glorious experience it was to work with such great people.
