Middlesex County, Massachusetts
John and the Hole ’were photographed extensively in Middlesex County. Actors and staff shot several scenes in Lexington, a town about six miles [10 km] from Downtown Boston, the capital of Massachusetts. Lexington holds historical significance and is known for its role in the American Revolutionary War. Minute Man National Historical Park, honoring the first war in the Revolutionary War, is a popular tourist destination in Lexington.
Lincoln, a town in Middlesex County near Lexington, is also one of the film’s sites. The city of Lincoln is known for its colonial history. A movie sequence was recorded in Sevens, a site chosen for the census. It is located in the towns of Ayer and Shirley (Middlesex County) and Harvard (Worcester County) and is a regional business center. The movie was shot on the Ayer-Devens side.
The makers may have chosen to film in Middlesex County because of the suburbs. The house with various windows and glass panels where John and his family live is a real house located in the region. In an interview with ScreenDaily, director Pascual Sisto explained the reason for the decision to shoot the house. “It was the idea of a fish hatchery; the idea that it was similar to the layout of a store window where you could see inside, and it was very expressive.
