No Sudden Move ‘was set up in 1950s Detroit, and a group of producers chose to shoot the film in an urban area, using many of Detroit’s endless locations. Due to the timing of the film, a group of producers spent a lot of time filming a scene in a historic district in Rosedale Park. The site, known for its mature brick houses built between the 1920s and 40s, was used to record the home of one of the film’s main characters. The filming took place on Ashton Avenue and Lyndon Street in the city.
The Park Shelton building, located in Midtown Detroit on 15 East Kirby Street, represented Gotham and was used to record outdoor scenes. The exterior of the building was used to display the once-famous Gothic Hotel, which was known to welcome the city’s rich and famous. The Maccabees Building, located at 5057 Woodward Avenue, and the cafe Amore da Roma at 3401 Riopelle Street also served as filmmaking centers.
With its presence in the 1950s Motor City, the film went a long way in making it a reality. The world headquarters under General Motors, which has been renovated Cadillac Place, was dressed to look like a former company. The building is located at 3044 West Grand Boulevard. The barbershop in Detroit in the 1950s was remodeled on East Jefferson Avenue, along with a few other cosmetic changes on the street.
The city of Detroit is an important background of the film as it follows the criminals who control the very city. Although it is cheaper to record in Cincinnati, Ohio, where many products go to achieve Detroit’s beauty at a very low budget, Soderbergh insisted on using the city as his recording studio and cut costs elsewhere to save money to shoot in Detroit.
Speaking about the importance of the city in the film, Cheadle told Detroit Free Press, “Detroit is also an actor in this movie and I think it’s full of everything that happens. There are some movies you can shoot anywhere… This was supposed to be in Detroit. It’s about Detroit. It’s about a sector that has inspired Detroit. It is about what happened when that industry decided it was more important than the people. ”
