In the Netflix original movie Malcolm and Marie, a director and his girlfriend’s relationship is tested after they return home from his movie premiere and they await the critic’s responses from the outset
Malcolm And Marie
Malcolm And Marie This feels like a stage play the rapid-fire dialogue has an almost hip-hop cadence to it john David Washington and zen day take turns doling out the praise criticism and hurts
The opening scene is outstanding as along take where we follow the two inside a house the setting for just about the entire movie, this is shot in black and white and honestly, it’s beautiful and cool to watch because of the harsh contrast between the shadow and the light
It works really well both of our characters are very (Malcolm And Marie) flawed and those flaws become more glaring as the story and the dialogue progresses the discussions they have I mean really they’re just huge fights but it surrounds several different themes
There are acknowledgment pasts abilities critiques and hurts (Malcolm And Marie) so if you’ve ever been in a passionate relationship and I’m not talking sexual when I speak of passion but one where emotions run
This one it’s probably going to resonate with you how it resonates though will have to be determined have you ever had a nasty verbal fight with someone you love that heart beating so fast and hard
The back and forth dialogue that happens when this theme is explored are Tense, the mannerisms especially on the part of Malcolm are funny but not that funny.
He’s eating his mac and cheese in (Malcolm And Marie) the middle of a fight in one instance and he’s yelling with his mouth full and he’s still just shoveling more in and he’s terribly aggressive when he eats too.
The words are being used as weapons that really pierce and wound way more than any physical weapon could they discuss the abilities it gets even harsher if that can be even imagined they use words to tear each other down giving critiques of each other in a way.
That nobody but someone who has intimate knowledge could do one of my favorite portions of the film comes as Malcolm receives his first review he just launches into this tirade that leaves him breathless, and we can feel the physical and emotional exertion.
He puts out while he’s giving all of his lines I love the message in this portion also he’s talking about several things but two of the points really struck me especially with what I’m doing right now reviewing a piece of film Malcolm talks about a white reviewer giving a critique on his film as a black male filmmaker and I find myself guilty sometimes of trying to find a message in something
They are culturally relevant and trying to bring about awareness or change due to the content but sometimes just the fact that the movie exists is commentary enough because sometimes
The entertainment that they have made so in a way I’m kind of diminishing their vision now that’s not to say that there aren’t movies out there with very deep messages that are using the medium to speak on issues.
Malcolm also addresses race and gender is points are pretty thought-provoking but we don’t have much time to ponder on the mat.
The moment that it’s going on because the story is ever-evolving, their conversations aren’t finished zen day’s Marie shows such amazing range she’s able to transition from emotion to emotion in the blink of an eye and at every moment.
She feels authentic the camera will focus on her as she’s on the receiving end of a verbal barrage and she conveys the hurt anger raged vastation even joy perfectly there are large moments of time in this where she’s quiet she’s just listening and yet.
She’s feeling and when she delivers her lines she’s powerful means it’s a mix of raw emotionality and calculated anger she’s got pent-up feelings that are finally being released and we see moments of catharsis and relief but also introspective moments.
Where she disappears into her (Malcolm And Marie) mind to internalize what’s being hurled other so as depressing as all these sounds there are moments of breath, there are some loving moments where the characters gently touch or kiss they reconnect after the verbal onslaught which also gives us a reprieve.
Because of the transitions between the arguing and the quiet moments, it’s an emotional rollercoaster it kept feeling like more was coming but the soundtrack in this is very much a character of the story Malcolm and Marie use it to speak for them at first. Malcolm And Marie
The songs that were being played were just for mood but when you listen to the words the songs punctuate what has just happened or they’re used as a precursor to what about to come there are so many facets of the relationship.
That is covered and they’re all with just palpable devastation the camera follows the characters as they move throughout the house, sometimes the camera locks down and we see the characters move in and out of the frame as they go about their arguments.
The tears rolling down their (Malcolm And Marie) cheek seven how their eyes are bloodshot from the tears and emotion and this intimate closeness the camera gives is wonderful but it’s also really painful this is an hour and 46 minutes of absolute emotional upheaval the acting is superb.
The dialogue is fierce and it’s delivered so well and they give such genuine exchanges that have tremendous authenticity as expertly crafted and executed.
The dialogue and movements combined with the black and white all while giving it a feel of a stage play.
This one a watch just be emotionally prepared to watch (Malcolm And Marie) something lighter afterward there’s no sex or nudity some sexual situations and dialogues ton of profanity and no violence.
